When you change the timing belt, replace all the pulleys/idlers/water pump as well - if the replacement belt does not line up with the pulleys etc it could break...my broken belt cost me a V6 Alfa engine.
The alternative is to go for a car with a chain-cam engine, eg a Saab which I have at present - keep changing the oil and filter regularly and it will just keep going - 250000 miles or more!
