my overhead projector keeps blowing bulbs quickly?

after going through several bulbs ( I'm carefull not to touch the bulb with my bare hand), I checked the voltage coming out of the socket and it reads 110 volts and the bulbs are rated for 82 volts. I notice in the circuit there is some sort of electronic circuit device, which I assume reduces the voltage going to the lamps. I have several of these projectors doing the same thing. The Overhead projector is an Elmo m/n HP-L1102. I would appreciate any help for my problem

There are several things that will cause bulbs to fail. The most common that I see is the bulbs are not installed all the way in their socket, they just set the bulb on top of the spring loaded socket pins and they will arc and overheat. The next thing is make sure that all air diverters are in place and that fan and screens are dust free. If the bulbs are bounced around like on a cart from classroom to classroom that will cause the bulb to quickly fail. If it fails at turn on there is a rectifier diode that will cause that problem.

I repair hundreds of these things a year at a school...the most common problem is the diode/rectifier or the fan is so clogged with dust and junk that it doesnt spin. Some simple repair steps would be to take the fan apart, clean it and oil it with light motor oil. If it is the line voltage (you can check with a volt meter), then you can replace the diode/rectifier for around $15...check out mbelectronics.com for original overhead repair parts. They do give a discount if you are a school.

That circuit device is a diode rectifier and it may be defective or has become defective over time. This has happened to me many a time and am going through the process of this at the moment. Regards Alan

AV person in a school. Have had same problems with EYB lamps in overheads. Possible causes: 1. building voltage fluctuations 2. fan/cooling slots covered 3. building thermostat turned way down at night, bulb gets cold and if not warm enough will fail at first ignition next morning 4. constant turning on/off. If you use an overhead turn it on and leave it on.
