my ariston magherita 2000 machine is not taking softener when washing. My husband has checked hoses, any ideas please?

Sue, look into the soap dispenser drawer when the fabric conditioner is meant to be flowing. You need to see a small quantity of water dropping down from the chamber above which starts the syphon process. Chances are these holes that the water flows through are blocked due to splashback, and they need to be unblocked using a small nail or similar.
