Well, I would suggest that this question is not easiliy answered. Generally if you are living in the US or other country with national electric codes it is very hard to trip all of the electricity in your home or what many electricians would call the main breaker which in most homes is 100 amps or bigger. I would more suspect you tripped one of the smaller 15 or 20 amp breakers. Unless your mainbreaker is a GFCI (Ground fault Circuit Interuption) type breaker. Now you may also have a very old fuse type box where a shorted appliance could take out an old and tired main fuse. I am betting this is your case if you lost electricity in the entire home. In any case any small appliance which causes a breaker or fuse to blow has what is known as a short which either directly connects the AC hot line directly to safety ground or the neutral line. A shorted motor can cause this but also can be due to a shorted power cord. If you plugged it in and the swich was off and you blew the fuse/breaker then it is more than likely the cord or could be the outlet in which you plugged it in to also? If the breaker/fuse did not blow until you turned the power swich on then the short is internal to you vacuume and the vacuume will need to be repaired before you can use it. Now in the small chance that you live in a thrid world type country where the power systems are very weak and not able to supply much in the way of current then you just may have simply overloaded the current supply capabilities of you electric supply.
