Whats wrong with my Hotpoint aquarius wf321?

MY washing machine gets stuck half way through a wash cycle and will go on and on forever if you let it and will not change over to rinse and spin , if you press cancell and choose rinse and spin it will complete the sequence , it just wont get to that stage autmatically when doing a wash ?
