Hotpoint Aquarius WMA32 - Won't condition clothes?

I have a hotpoint aquarius wma32. The clothes will wash correctly and the washing powder will go from the tray but they won't condition properly. If i put the conditioner in at the same time as the powder at the beginning of the wash it is still there at the end. If I put it in at the beginning of the rinse cycle the clothes don't smell any different than if the conditioner hasn't gone through the wash. If there is no "mend" for this then at what point during the wash should I put it in so that my clothes smell of conditioner and have been conditioned. I am using bucket loads of conditioner just to get my clothes smelling nice.
