Not an answer ...
My x3480 is 14 months old and I got the same error msg on replacing a cartridge.
Obvioulsy a common fault, see Brimar in answering the same problem from S Bell July 08. See Jeanne Mayo July 08. Also check out R Crisp Jan 08 and Noor Jan 08. And on eBay today, there is someone selling an x3480 for spares or repair as he gets the msg "cover open".

This should be repaired or replaced by lexmark as it is a DURABILITY problem. The warranty period is not relevant in this circumstance. They should act responsibly if something breaks within the 'reasonable' life of a printer. But what is the reasonable expected life of a computer printer? I'd say 2 to 3 years, and that's how I'm going to approach Lexmark. Watch this space.

Sorry, this is not really an answer, but I have the same problem. I have found that a small plastic 'lever', that operates a switch on the circuit board when the cover is opened, is brocken. I am trying to source a replacement 'lever' but, as yet cannot find one. I would be very greatful if anyone can point me in the direction of such a 'lever'. I know that this does not help you, but at least you know what the 'problem' is.
