Mine had this problem and I bought the little component, soldered it in, and problem solved for about £20. Bear in mind the warnings on these websites about the level of expertise needed, and don't try it unless you are into that sort of thing.

Not a solution, I'm afraid, but just to say that I have the same problem.My Panasonic machine will suddenly go into self-check mode when I try to record a programme direct to a DVD-R disk and also when I try to dub from the hard drive onto a disk. Eventually, it does record, but I suspect that the problem may get worse, so I look forward to any positive replies !
