Answering my own question, I found out another way. On the display PCB board at the connector end is an electrolytic capacitor marked 25V 100 (200?) microFarad. I guessed this should have a voltage between 5 and 12 volts on it. Actually measured 0.1 Volts (reversed).
Got the main electronics module out, and found on the PCB a cracked chip with signs of heat around it (TNY264PN) . Tried replacing the chip but still dead as a doornail.
Without a circuit diagram for this PCB I am probably going to give up!
