servis washing machine?

problem started two weeks ago,always put wash on number 4 just a basic 40 wash,as soon as machine was pressed on the usual sound came on but no water came into the drum and it seems like the cycle was just going round.
on another occassion i think i smelt alittle burning
i called up a plumber he came and said its something to do with the elements and charged me ten pounds call out charge without repairing the machine that day .the ten pounds was just to diagnose the problem ,im going mad here with four children i really do need my machine up and running,please can anyone out there help me
