Janine,
If you are comparing this to the old VCRs, they had a tuner (analogue) for the recording channel, whilst you could watch a different channel on the TV set.
If you are relying on just one (digital) tuner on the DVD, it can only do one thing at a time.
You would need another digital tuner, to be able to watch a different digital channel (such as a simple "set-top" box).
Hope that helps.

Your recorder only has one tuner and so, as has been said, it can only do one thing at a time and so you need a separate Freeview Set Top Box or a Freeview equipped TV to view Freeview while recording.
As to your comment, how many Video Recorder? do you know that have two tuners? If you want a box that enables you to view while to view while recording you need what is known as Twin Tuner Personal Video Recorder (PVR).

I don't know but what's the point of a recorder if you can't watch other programmes at same time?
