timing belt trouble in 1995 vectra?

i recently replaced mt timing belt on my 1995 vauxhall vectra 1600 16valve,now the problem,when i removed the lower cam cover and set the two cams to their marks i noticed the crank marks was 2 cogs to the right of the mark dont know how or why? so i removed the damaged timing belt,replaced the water pump new spark pluge new oil new alternator belt only to find after puttin everything back together as per the specs in the haynes manual there wes still a continuos knocking noise coming from inside the cam cover(completely baffled) the only thing i can possibly think i did wrong was haynes only showed one small pic of the water pump and wasnt exactly sure how to house it but it seemed to be fine but i cant understand how i still gettin this knocking any ideas?
