Hi Linda,
You need to hook the rf output of the vcr to the rf input of the dvd recorder. Use a tv video cable, the one that screws into the back of the tv. Make sure your tv is on and you are watching the output of the DVD recorder. Then when you are ready make sure the dvd is on but the menu is not visible. Press stop on the remote control. This should show what is on the dvd tuner and you should be able to watch tv channels or whatever. Change the channel to 3 on the input of the DVD player then press play on your vcr. If you can see the tape playing, then you are ready.
i use the DVD +r disks in mine, but the minus work as well. Put the disk in and let it find the disk, read it and get ready. Press stop on the DVD remote control again after it is ready. Then just rewind your video to where you want to start. Press the record button on the remote control or the front of the unit and then press play on your vcr tape. After the vcr tape is over just press stop on the dvd remote. When you are finished, make sure to finalize the dvd so you can watch it in other players. You will have to press the "setup" button to get into this menu. Finalize the DVD and you are done.
If your tape has a lot of recording on it, then make sure to press the REC MODE button so the dvd has enought time to record whatever is on your tape. It will do 1 hour, 2 hours, 2.5 etc. Just set the time BEFORE you record so the dvd won't cutoff before your tape is finished.
Have fun!
Craig
p.s. it would work better with the rca inputs (red, white for audio and yellow for video) and all you have to do is change the channel to either the front or back video input.
