Rest the machine by switching the mains off and on, when it comes on and says "wait" press and hold the eject button ON THE MACHINE, this sometimes overides the function the machine is hopelessly trying to do!
I have previously had disks in the machine overnight whilst it trys doing something, and the next day still showing a blank screen I just pulled the plug from the mains (Because not even the on/off switch worked) then referring to the first paragraph, the disk eventually will be ejected with a nice warm temp of 100oC !!!! probably then it will never read the disk again NOR will any PC understand what the machine has done to the disk either, My advice!! if your transferring those treasured memories, make sure the disk finalizes, eject, reinsert, then play to make sure it works before you destroy any original materials!

Thanks a million for that. Had the same problem; player refused to do anything but try to read a DVD that it couln't understand. Took the lid off, took the top of the DVD compartment, even dropped a 'tiny screw' down somewhere in the chassis. But now it works. Where would we be without jewellers' screwdrivers? Thanks again. Graham.

I GOT FED UP WAITING FOR AN ANSWER SO DECIDED TO HAVE A GO MYSELF. FOR ANYONE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM TRY THIS.REMOVE THE COVER OF THE PLAYER. THERE ARE 4 TINY SCREWS HOLDING THE COVER OF THE DVD UNIT INSIDE. UNDO THESE AND LIFT UP THE COVER GENTLY. YOU CAN THE REACH IN AND PHYSICALLY REMOVE THE DISK. RE-ASSEMBLE AND EVERYTHING SHOULD WORK O.K. I FIND MOST OF THE TIME THE PROBLEMS ARE CAUSED BY THE DISKS AND NOT THE MACHINE.
