Some 1600cc models have a metal pipe that runs along the back of the engine from the watepump to the thermostat housing, this goes porous and leaks.

Ask your mechanics to look for leaks around the water pump - which means the timing belt cover has to come off. If alls ok here, the heater matrix may have sprung a leak, but there would be a curious smell inside the car.
