yes, as if yourengine overheats it may cause a total engine failure.
it should not be a difficult job on an average car allow a half hour or so.

Get a price on a new thermostat if its too expensive for you, just take out the thermostat and run it without, by doing this it just takes longer to get warm. The thermostat makes the heater warm up faster. - Brian

The thermostat costs around £10, and you'll find it at the engine end of the top radiator hose.
