Potterton EP2000 central heating not working?

Hope somebody can help.

I have an old (beige/grey) Potterton EP2000 elctronic programmer (CH + HW 24hr). Yesterday I went to switch on the CH, flicked the CH slider to timed and there as an audible "pop" behind the control/settings slider. HW was on when I flicked the CH slider. I thought a fuse had blown but checked the main circuit board for the house and all fuses were ok. Since then our CH hasn't worked. I opened up the EP2000 but could only see the battery and wiring so couldn't see anything to do with the sliders/settings. The system fired up this morning on timer, HW is fine but still no CH. Can anybody advise on what might be the issue?

I'm not much of an electrician/plumber so be gentle with me!!

I have CH but no HW or it runs intermittently I fitted a new thermostat to cylinder and have two valves and a Pump when the HW is turned on I hear the valve move the pump doesn't start or boiler . With CH and HW on all works fine does anyone have any ideas please?

Just get an EP2002 - it's a direct replacement and you don't even need to change the backplate - same backplate, same wiring - dead easy!

Hi I also have a Potterton EP2000 where the only way to get the hot water on is to have the CH on at the same time. Does anybody have an explanation as to why this is and whether it's possible to fix it?

I have a Potterton EP2000. Its recently started malfunctioning. I cant turn the HW on without the CH being turned on aswell. Anybody got an idea or somewhere i can get a user manual from.

my potterton 2002 keeps blowing the 3a fuse when sliding the CH or HW on. been working fine for 5-6 years, any ideas anyone?? theres a pump and and a silver box with a slider wired to it, dont know wot this is!! im no heating engineer, thanks tony!

Hi just out of interest I have potterton timer that appears to be faulty, I have spoken to potterton's senior technical help who seems to only think that the timer are installed in the boiler and not on a wall at a more convenient location, basically I have given up on then and will fit something from another supplier who has a technoical help that understands there own products.

all potterton programmers have the same wiring

you could email the company to make sure its an original and not a cheap copy

there reply would be your guarantee its the same just in case

Hi John

The problem is finally resolved.

It was a faulty zone valve motor. The motor has been replaced and heating is on upstairs and downstairs. My original Potterton EP2000 programmer still works too so I have returned the EP2002 that I bouhgt to replace what we thought was a faulty/blown EP2000.

The only thing I can think of Martin, is that your heating system has an electrically operated zone valve which is remaining in the closed position - hence no heat down stairs. If you can locate this valve, they usually have a manual overide lever on the outside which you can move. Maybe its this that caused the programmer to pop in the first place? If you indeed have such a thing, the electric motor on the valve is called a 'power head' which is available separately. Can only wish you luck! Cheers John

Hi John

I have relaced the EP2000 programmer with the EP2002 which superceded the EP2000. Only difference is that it has seperate timers for weekends. The company I got it from said it's a straight swap for my old one, which it is no rewiring necessary.

However, I now have heating updtairs (3 rads) but no heating downstairs (4 rads). Can't even feel the rad pipes warming up downstairs. Bled the downstairs rads but no change.

The EP2002 programmer was set for 16 programs as default so I changed it to the setting for simple systems (10 programs / gravity HW pumped CH) to see if that made a difference but still nothing downstairs.

Any ideas?

You'll find that your programmer has a burnt out switch or circuit board.....you'll need to replace the whole unit so see if you can find the exact Potterton replacement. If you can't, the Horstmann equivalent is the CentaurPlus C21 (there may be other makes of course). Unfortunately this will require a rewire though, although instructions do come with the new unit. As par for the course though, no one can understand them.....!
