How can I fix my Cannon gas fire?

Buy a different fire. The Coalridge is ancient.

where can i buy gasket material for the front glass and does it have to seal to prevent CO2 leakage? It is a Cano Coalridge

Cleaned the spade connectors as recommended by Julie. Lit first time after that and still burning after an hour. Result.

Mine has just exploded while trying to ignite - could have seriously injured somebody - peppered opposite wall and sofa with shards of glass. If you have one, just get rid of it.

iv just had this problem got the part off e bay fitting was simple and fire works fine and no im not a gas safe registed but iv do know what im doing and have proper tools

It is the safety device. When the pilot is lit it heats the thermocouple that reacts through temprature/expansion relationship with a sprung seated valve that stops gas being supplied to the main burners. When the thermocouple is hot enough it allows this seated valve to lift so that when you release from the pilot position gas is ready to be delivered to your main burners. When you now turn your flame position control a sprung loade ported valve turns allow differing rates of gas to flow. Your Sprung loaded valve has probably broke at the control spring. It is under the aluminium M8 nut at the back . I dont know if you can buy this spare , i imagine its very cheap to produce so you may have to buy a new control valve. I'm not a gas engineer just an engineer who has a greater interest in how thing work rather than taking money out of your pocket. Looking at them it should take a registered competent gas fitter no longer than 15 minutes to change plus his post fit checks. It's a shame you cant do it yourself and just get someone in to safe regiter it but hey thats the way it goes.

with people like Robert that dose not know the difference between a thermocouple & a injector you should be careful about some of the advice you are given, and get a registered gas safe engineer.it might cost you £50-70 but it will be safe & correct. PS It is also illegal to work on gas appliances yourself, so if things do go wrong you would find your house insurance would not cover you

have a cannon coalridge fire 16 years old. had saftey check and failed due to saftey device not working.its only as big as a pen top but you cant get them you have to replace the whole unit at a cost of £90 plus fitting. mine was not shutting off. yours is the reverse.if you look where th thremocouple screws in you will find a aluminium nut the little unit is behind there. the best way and safest is to call a gas engineer.

Ok, so now you have cleaned the jet/replaced the thermocouple: technicaly you have done work on the gas fire. How are you going to check it is safe to use!! You don't know do you!! That's why you have to pay a gas safe regisetered engineer to do the work. He will comply with the Gas regulations and provide you with the peace of mind that your nearest and dearest won't be harmed. He needs to earn a living, so it might cost you £50-60

all of you should make sure that the fire is safe to use after messing around with it. It does not take much to upset the fsd and if not checked propely the fire could be un-safe and cause CO

Tim, I have the same fire and have just had it repaired with the same problem. Remove the two screws holding the cast iron top cover and lift it off. Next remove the front base and then the gold covers. They just lift off. Then remove all the screws and plates holding the glass cover onand carefully remove the glass. This will give you access to the thermocouple. There is a plate below the thermocouple on the front of the fire held in place by two screws. Remove these and the plate and you then have access to the retaining screws for the thermocouple. Remove it and clean it out carefully with a very thin wire on long pin. You will probably find that it is clogged with dirt. When clean rebuild the thermocouple and try lighting. If you get a pilot light but the fire still wont light, carefully alter the position of the small narrow pipe to the right of the thermocouple until the gas fire lights. Putting the glass cover in place temorarily will help the fire to ignite. I hope this helps It cost me £20 to get this done by a friendly gas fitter.

we have a 15 year old cannon caress. The fire goes out after variable times when set at low or high. It stays lit on medium. We have had 2 different plumbers to it, without success.

we would be very grateful for a solution to the problem.

We have just had the engineer out - second time since had the fire - it is just dust/dirt that gets in the ignitor - he has told us twice that we must keep the pilot light on and not to turn off. Of course we turned it off when we went on holiday and now it won't work.
Anyway he said it is a problem with these fires. Also there is a metal prong in the ignitor that is made of different metals and if they get hot and expand they dont always line up. It will prob cost you abt £55 to mend.

It could be that the spade connectors to the thermocouple gas flow switch need cleaning. It did the trick on mine. The switch is located behind the righthand side panel of the fire.

It may not actually be the thermocouple itself, it could possibly be the quality or size of the pilot and where it contacts the thermocouple.

Yes, I have the same problem, but am unable to find anyone who can supply a replacement. My engineer has tried 3 different suppliers to no avail. The British Gas engineer who came to service the boiler quoted £130+ to come back and put one in!!

I think you will find that this is a constant & ongoing problem with the Canon Coalridge. I hav had 4 new thermocouples fitted & still the gas does not release when you let go of the button. The safety gas shut off 'kicks in' too soon.
