Mend Today Boiler Working House

why does cooker emit smell?

i was at my mothers today her boiler is not working and she had gas hob on cooker on to keep house warm but there was a strong paraffin like smell coming from it she said she has been feeling ill with headaches too so i turned it off and opened some windows could this be a serious problem

iF THE HOUSE HAD BEEN PAINTED RECENTLY IT WILL SMELL OF PARAFFIN FOR A WHILE WHEN A GAS COOKER ETC IS LIT. I DONT KNOW WHY BUT IT DOES
