Smeg cooker - element and electrics?

Funnily enough, my around 4 years old Smeg Dual Fuel Cooker SUK61MPL8's oven element just went (I assume - fan blowing cold air, as I realised when I retrieved oven chips from it last night).
With this model, the door seal seems to perish after a while (it has a rather shoddy design, 4 hooks on each corner glued into the rubber which comes apart eventually)...at £20+ a pop it doesn't seem much but I've just bought my second. Never had problems with cheapo cookers - in fact my old cookers were so good I'd sell them on! Is there a better made door seal alternative, I wonder?
The wok burner hob gave up the ghost after about two years too.
Given that I'm a single woman and tend to microwave pretty often, it's pretty rubbish.

I have a Smeg JLRC902 - i need to change the thermocoupler - any advice on removing the cooker top - can't seem to unlock release the top at the front of the over - after removing the front panel I can't see any obvious screws.

We have a SMEG A1.1 Range cooker (now not working again!).
UK White Goods appears an excellent company for spares. Very reasonable and quick delivery.

Just fixed our oven element on the SUK91CMX5.YOU MUST ISOLATE THE COOKER FROM THE MAINS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING WITH THE ELEMENTS. I was about to order a new element when i thought i would check the size just to be sure, when looking at the element it didn't appear to be blown fortunately this oven has two elements the same so i swapped the connections over and discovered the element that was not working previously was now working. To cut a long story short i removed the outer back panel traced the wiring to a pcb in the lower corner where there was a dry solder joint, re soldered and all functioning fine again, also discovered some badly burned wiring from sloppy installation, corrected that as well.

Hi,we have a smeg cooker which we purchased 2 weeks before christmas 2010,in that 2 weeks the main oven light blew and so did the thermo switch,oh joy! it was fixed but we where lucky i had to kick up a stink, they wanted to send an engineer in the new year!!within 8 months the main oven element was replaced,the thermo switch had to be replaced 4 times,i d had enough and after countless phone calls Smeg replaced the unit 2 weeks before last christmas.now 8 months on the new unit is up to old tricks and as its still classed as old as the original its out of warranty,but as a jesture of goodwill Smeg will fix it.Well its now been 2 weeks since the engineer turned up with the wrong part(which he clearly knew what to bring as i had told the service dept) and with a family with 6 people its getting beyond a joke,i want a refund!! ONLY BUY SMEG IF YOU ARE ONLY WANTING YOUR KITCHEN TO LOOK GOOD AS THEY CANNOT BE RELIED ON TO BE USED FOR WHAT THEY SHOULD DO!!

I bought a new Smeg SUK62MFX5 6 years ago. I've already had to spend £160 plus on four seperate repairs so far. Now the grill element has gone. They may look good but they're total junk in my opinion. I'd never buy another Smeg product.

Try the Office of Fair Trading, I rang them and was told that an item that cost 850 pounds (in my case a Whirlpool American fridge freezer - never again) should be expected to last five years. I was told to write to Curry's who I'd bought it off, as it was out of manufacturer’s warranty, they even told me what to write! Give it a try.

My Smeg oven DUCO8CBL is only 3 1/2 years old and needs its 4th element. I have tried to call smeg who can offer a repair at £180 with a 12 month guarantee on it. I don't fancy paying them that every year when it keeps breaking. Also have a smeg washing machine thats the same age and is beyond repair. Will never ever buy smeg again!!!

i have smeg a1-2 range for 8 years and after 2 years could smell burning plastic at the rear of the oven, after removing back of oven casing sheild, found that main cable connector box from mains to the oven was overheating and melting the partition sheild which could have killed the oven , i bought strong " enamle style bakerloo connector block" and re-wired cables.
its been fine ever since with no oven problems untill now the clock has gone off after a few intermisant times and now wont come back on, £150.00 to replace part.

anyone have the same problems

Grill will not work in the top oven, changed the element but no joy so the frill has gone, any advise please other than skip it.

Wow looking at all these peoples problems i'm surprise smeg are still in business

2x glass on oven door both shattered
2x safety thermostat cut out
2 bulbs
last eng did something and now the clock and the display are broken!! and they dont make them any more, but i'm told there is a replacement at a cost 180pounds for the part, plus the fit and im told its not straight forward, so 60 call outout to..... SMEG i will never buy or recommend your product to anyone ever in fact i'm going to tell everyone about this site, smeg by name and nature

Just to update,

I have a broken main over commutator.

The main oven switch is made of plastic, and as a result of constant heating and cooling causes the platic to get brittle and break, and the contacts fall off.

New part was about £20.

I too have a failed main oven.

Nothing happens when I turn the dial, no light, no fan, no heat, it's as if it's been turned off at the wall. Is there afuse to look for?

Just had my SMEG DUCO4SS go bang. The main oven is dead. No light, no fan and no heat. It's only two years old and has seen light use. Anyone know if the light and fan are in the same circuit as the element or has something more major gone wrong?

Today was the first time I'd ever replaced an element. Fiarly simple, once I'd got the old one off. I had to snap the bolts before my nut-shaped screwdriver adapter would fit over the top.

I've had the cooker about 6 years and I must agree that it's a triumph of style over substance. One of the cooker rings either works on full or not at all.

A couple of years ago, the oven kept on tripping the electrics eery time I turned it on. A friend looked and found one on the wires had had its plastic burned through and was shorting out against the back panel. Easy to fix but it needed an eletrician to diagnose as the hole wasn't obvious.

Finally, I got the element from http://www.elementman.co.uk/. Good price and it was delivered next day.

I have just replaced the main oven element and that hasn't fixed the problem and I don't fancy rebuilding the cooker one expensive bit after another to get it working again. Does anyone have a fault finding / troubleshooting guide?

Oh great, I've got a SMEG SUK92MFX5 of which the main element has just blown. Was hoping to find some answers and the main thing I've gained is the knowledge that this is probably the beginning of the end for my oven. Can't wait for everything else to go wrong with it.

Broken pan stand (replacements apparently unavailable), fourth element, second fan, after 14 months wok burner ignition will not ignite even though it sparks, oven door needs regular tightening and it's dark in the oven because I can't get the bulb cover off.

Thin stamped sheet stainless held together with self tapping screws but in fairness the old girl has just turned ten. Still couldn't recommend one, going German this time.

I have SUK92MFX5 for about 4 yrs now an d have replaced bulb, element and now the small oven thermostat. on taking the sides off to identify and replace parts you see this little cooker is all fur coat and no knickers. appalling assembly and very cheap parts. i would have expected more from a premium brand like this.

I've had my Smeg A1.1 for nearly 10 years now. It's garbage and I've had the following (some are still ongoing):

1) Central ring element x 1
2) Thermocouples x 4
3) Burner igniters x 6
4) Commutators (expensive) x 2
5) Over door Handle support - x 1 (still trying to source)
6) Front panel information livery ALL now washed away
7) Bottom tray door x 1 (ill fitting not bothered to replace)
8) Oven bulb x 1
9) Oven on/temp indicator x 1 (still sourcing)
10) Temperature Backlighting and holder x 2
11) Wiring harness x 1 (about to go)

Don't buy SMEG, they're rubbish, unless you don't want to cook and just like staring at it. After a while though even the aesthetics becomes bland

I have just experienced this intermittent cutting out. It was in the main oven, the clock went and the oven stopped working. The top oven appears to still be working. After a while the clock turns back on and flashes, when I re-set the time it starts working again.

Alongside this, the oven has been getting very hot over the last few months and often burns things within a few minutes regardless of temperature.

Not sure what to do?

I've had my SMEG Opera A3-6 for 6 years now and it's been fine...It's developed it's first fault...Turning on the main oven and for around 20 minutes or so all's ok...then the timer clock goes blank for around 15 minutes and the main oven cuts out, the fan works, the small oven works.....after 15 minutes, the timer clock comes back on, the main oven powers up....and 20 minutes later off it goes....after 15 minutes it all comes back again..and so this goes on!

The hinges are going on the main door and I've just fitted a replacement seal.

Has anyone experienced this intermittent cutting out with their main oven?

I have a similar fault on my SUK92MX5 where the auxilary oven still works but the main oven, ignition and clock have all stopped working after the element blew. Did anyone find a cure for this?!!!!

Hi - we have had a SMEG A42 for 9 years and have been lucky only three faults so far main element blew, grill element blew and now we have a fan problem. The venting fan for the top oven worn't switch off. Any ideas of how this works. I am assuming a thermostat for the fan needs replacing and will do it myself but would welcome advice before I try. PS If you haven't got one yet DONT BUY A SMEG!

Add me to the SUK62MFX5 disaster list. My bottom oven has just gone. Great. Just in time for Christmas. I found this sight as I was looking to get it repaired. This is a disaster. I can't believe there are so many of us with this issue. Mine was about 7-8 yrs old as well. I even had an extended warranty that finally ran out about 6 mths ago. Lovely.

Another SUK92MX5 disaster. After paying around £1250 for this oven in our new kitchen we were very pleased. However after 6 months the element packed in. Smeg replaced under warranty. After warranty expired we had private engineer out twice to replace two further elements. We knew they were on their way out when it used to start tripping the mains on a regular basis.
After 3.5 yrs of regular faults the mains started to get tripped by the oven every day. We had luckily just taken out a Homeserve parts and labour warranty. £53 for 12 months. 1 week into it the oven stopped working. It turned out on the small print we couldn't claim for the first 28 days........
A month with only the small oven working passed and an engineer arrived 4 days late. The main oven would heat up but as soon as the fan was activated bang went the mains trip. Engineer was puzzled having replace element and fan already. He ordered a new control box and said this was the only thing left to replace (which had to come from Italy). Another 10 days passed. Eventually he arrived to finally fix the oven........ This new part made no difference - He despaired and so did we. he said there was nothing more that could be done - the oven was of no use. homeserve are now going to refund a paltry amount of our cover. I AM FURIOUS WITH SMEG !!
We went back to John Lewis where we bought it to see if there was any hope but we were way outside the warranty but the assisstant did say they had had a lot of complaints in the previous 12 months.
Why should Smeg get away with this?? There is enough of us on here with problems let alone the people who are not on here. Why don't we take it to Watchdog as another person suggested as this is just not acceptable.

I have had my smeg double oven 6 years, it arrived with a smashed element in the fan over, this has now been replaced twice more, the rubber seal around the fan door replaced. Now I can't use the fan over because there is no temperature control and it just goes to very very hot and I am worried it will now catch fire. Customer Services don't want to know, never return any emails, letters or phone calls. Agree with the comments looks great but is not any good practically.

I am afraid I concur with everything said here:

Smeg multifuel oven so far over 9 years I have replaced

4 fan elements
2 fans (1 under guarantee in first 6 mths)
re-glued/sealed glass on oven door
1 safety thermostat cut out
2 bulbs

Currently fan oven will not operate without tripping kitchen circuit

Considering if I call it quits now or look at replacing the oven switch unit?

They look good but are wholly unreliable

On positive side I have developed an understanding of the insides of an oven

I am just experiencing the same with my A2-6 5½ years old and greatly used. First the clock did not display, but the main oven would work, then the main oven would not function at all.

HOWEVER, when I applied pressure to the front panel around the top edge of the clock it would display and display the correct time and also the main oven would then function.

To me it seems like a problem with the control panel, some sort of short maybe, power is obviously getting to the clock module because it maintains the correct time even if it doesn't display it.

The symptoms have gotten worse over the past few weeks, initially slight pressure on the clock controls would display the clock with the main oven working fine. So its off to SMEG, wish me well.

I've had a UK60FMX for 9 years and had similar problems with parts failing - Smeg seems to be a triumph of style over functionality. This one replaced an older Zanussi that gave no trouble. The main problem now is that the graphics on the front panel (itself a replacement) have almost vanished, so selecting oven temperature is based on memory and guesswork. No one seems to keep spares of this part so the cooker will soon be junked - and NOT replaced by another Smeg.

Have had the main oven and clock go on my suk62mfx5 . Tried replacing the element but did not solve the problem. Have been on to SMEG and a lady on the main switchboard for customer relations did not seem surprised but said that apparently if you replace the clock then it solves the problem and the oven often starts working!!!! Surely the power for the main oven is not routed through the clock first, if it is then I suppose it could act like a circuit breaker. Any body heard of this or tried it before I spend £100 on another part.

Firstly sorry to read about your SMEG cooker disasters. Mine was 9 years old when the top grill element has finally went. I am vegetarian and interestingly the element blew when a friend stopped over and cooked meat sausages for the first time. He put the 'bangers' very close to the element. I can't say scientifically that this was the cause. Calling SMEG looked expensive and a local fix it man wouldn't touch it! Anyway I bought a replacement on line and decided to fix it myself. 0) Turn off the electrics in your house, can't be too careful! 1) 6 screws at the back of cooker 2) Four connectors and earth in the middle slide off easily. 3) Undo the small retaining nuts, two on the right side holding a small metal plate and connection block. 4) Slide out the element noting the two ceiling hooks. 5) Loosen the screws on these hooks and rotate 135 degrees i.e. hooks face other way. 6) Slide in new grill , the retaining wire that holds it the ceiling was slightly different in the element I bought, this may be fixing the burning out element problem. 7) Reattach small nuts and the four connectors and earth (in the right order), you may to bend in the ceiling hooks, note they are now further away from the element ring. 8). Screw back on to the oven. Presto

i have a smeg a2 with we purchased over five years ago, have apart from the the thermal cutout going in the 1st 6 monthss, which they came and fixed ( and would say they extgended my warranty to compensate) apart from that my ovens are used every day and are usually on for about 2 this is the first time i have got to replace the main element part that went , but not sure if was due to the main power cut we got at the time, would definately buy another a2 ,
been a brilliant gem just a butter to keep the inner door very clean.

3 days to go til christmas, I got no heat in the main oven on my smeg A2/5 ? i probably need an enginner but is it just one element ? the thermostat light does'nt illuminate anymore..... easy to fix meself ?

Our A42 the same. Now on our fourth oven element in as many years. I'm just about to buy a new fan motor and also need a new control panel now that all the lettering has washed off. We keep the downtime to a minumum by keeping a few spares handy. It is strange that the oven lamps are much more reliable than the heating elements; we haven't had to replace one yet. I suppose that's because they are not made by Smeg.

The skip is tempting but at about sixty to a hundred quid a year to maintain, it's cheaper to keep it going than buy another. I do not recommend Smeg to anyone.

I had the same problem yesterday - in the middle of cooking Sunday dinner for family! Tripped the electrics but hadn't realised the heat had gone in the oven. After reading these posts I suppose it's going to happen again and I'm extremely dissapointed after spending so much money on it I'd expect it to last for years. There goes the pride & joy of my kitchen and it's not two years old

Has anybody had a formal response from Smeg? It's shocking that they deny there are any issues with this model and I honestly thought I'd have no problem in them offering to fix it for free.
As a goodwill gesture Smeg have offered to pay for the part but I will have to pay the call-out fee. Not acceptable at all.

We have had our smeg oven and dishwasher for 5 years and again both have more often not worked than worked. We have spent a small fortune getting them both fixed and have just binned the diswaher refusing to pay out any more and now the oven has (element we think) broken again for the fourth time in 5 years! Never buy smeg!

I also have a smeg SUK62MFX5 which I purchased around 4 years ago brand new - what a load of rubbish, paid around £800 for it and it's more often broken than not, replaced element twice, now not working again. Orange lights have fallen out, the inside of the glass on the door was dirty within a few months of buying. This is my second SMEG, the last one was as bad, I would go out of my way to suggest people do not buy a SMEG appliance.

I have to add this same thing has happened with our smeg and is still happening. Now when I replace the element, simply turning the oven on blows the whole house. I have replaced the element 4 times.

It cost us over a grand, and I bought it because it was supposedly a good make and would last for years, what a waste of money.

We have had it two years.

I'll never buy smeg again.

Gosh. So it is not just ours!
Smeg oven that cost us a small fortune went in the skip after just two years! Same thing as someone else mentioned. Main oven element blew so many times we ended up on first name terms with our repair guy. Tried to complain...after being on the phone for over two hours was sent back to where I started. I have never been so angry in my life. I will never buy a Smeg product again in my life. It must be illegal what they are doing. They are selling a product that does not work.
We now have a Neff oven which is what we had before we bought the Smeg. No problems EVER with their products!

I've had a Smeg A42 since 1999 and the main oven element fails every 14 months. Easy to fix but a pain. Now though my house RCD trips when I try to reset the clock and I can't find any fault. It's going in a skip. Smeg customer service are extremely poor. NEVER BUY A SMEG is the advice I give to everyone.

I too have a Smeg SUK92MX5 - the fan element has gone twice since I purchased it in April 2005 (the second time tripping the electrics). I have e-mailed Smeg and I think based on all of your responses that a call to Watchdog could be the way forward - surely they can produce a part that works for a reasonable amount of time!!!

We too have this dreadful cooker. My husband replaced the heater element in the main oven last time it blew. He did this by replacing the element via the insiode of the oven - not taking the back off.

Now we have another problem of heater element gone and clock, electric ignition etc. This has been mentioned before and the advice here was that this means that the thermal cut out has gone also. If this is the case can anyone advise of part number or similar for this thermal cut out there seem to be a few on show on various parts websites but even ringing them no ne can advise what part I need.

Hi - I've also got a SMEG SUK92MFX5. This is the third time that the main oven element appears to have blown. The first time it was under guarantee, the second cost me £60. I thought this time, I'd have a go and replace the element myself. Assuming I can find the part! The problem I have is that I have taken off the back panel, and removed the bottom screw. However, the element appears fixed. It has two small 5.5mm screws at the top that won't turn. Has anyone any advice on how the element should be replaced, without damaging the main unit? I agree with everyone else on one matter - this cooker is not worth the money paid - I would never have expected this inconvenience - the element has so far blown once every year.

I have the same cut out problem with my A42. Smeg customer service ( Lisa ) have denied any knowledge of the faults.
I am in contact with them and will publish their comments.
They are defensive and have given me many contradictory statements in the same conversation.
Perhaps there is an appropriate body that would hear these complaints? Consumer rights??

Ours has done exactly the same twice! On two different cookers. The first was replaced after a year by Allders after numerous service visits. The new one is not a lot better. The burner don't stay alight either - same on both cookers!
SMEG's customer service department is pathetic.
Avoid them!!!

Hi,
I have had the fan element and thermal cut out (TCO) blow twice!!
Ist time 21/1/05. Replaced by Smeg. These items have blown again now 16/12/05. First time I still had use of the small oven. This time I lost everything and it blew the main fuse box in the house!!
There is no internal fuse. It is simply the TCO, a small white disc with TY60 stamped on it and the element. Fairly simple to remedy. Getting the parts is another thing altogether!!
My feelings are that this cooker is a heap of rubbish.
I have been told mine is a one off. Obviously not. This cooker has a problem!!
