Hi Tom, sounds like the gearbox speed sensor has failed, the way to find out is have the car hooked up to a diagnostic unit and that wiil tell you what the fault is. Main dealer will charge around £70 but chech your local tyre & exhaust places many now offer diagnostic checks for £30
