You need to remove and replace it - along the lines of the fix below. It works, I used Butyl tape rather than silicon sealant, its easier to use and less likely to go all over the place if you're a clumsy oaf like me. I got 12 metres of 4mm tape for about £3 off the internet - a lot more than is needed for the job!

Spinnaker tape worked a treat (thanks Dr Bodge!) And it looks good too (got it in black). Bought some off of Amazon for £5 and sealed off all around the circumference of the sunroof along the seal. It won't open now, but I never really use it, and it's stopped the water leaking in. Much cheaper fix than any I found elsewhere. Renault Enfield wanted £900 to replace the sunroof! They said they couldn't see a leak so would have to replace the whole unit! That's now an £895 saving! Woooeeeeh!

take off the wheel and wheel arch lining and you can get to the tube which will prob be blocked by a build up off dirt.it solved the problem for me.

I went for a real cheap and nasty.....it seems to work but it isn't pretty (nor is a P reg 1.2 with 165K on the clock!)......go to e-bay, buy some spinnaker tape (used to mend sails, so glue is pretty much waterproof). Corners are a bit of a challenge though not impossible, and it seems to have worked for a princely sum of £7. It isn't pretty, but it is cheap, easy and effective!

Just would like to add some more information to this forum.....
Your sunroof may leak from the sun visors or the interior light....please also note that if your car has central locking the sensor is in this area, so it is advisable that you have the sunroof repaired sooner rather than later as this sensor will get damaged and your central locking will not work any longer so you will have to pay out more than necessary.
We have carried out hundreds of these repairs over the past 5 years and we have NEVER had a customer return with a problem.
This repair REALLY works....we guarantee that!!!
Please give us a call for a quote on freephone 0800 770880 and if you need any questions answered - we are happy to say that we are a fraction of the price of the dealerships.

Renault Clio factory fitted sunroofs are very prone to leaking.
Here at CCS Windscreens Ltd, Navigation Road, Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 6HD, we repair all types of sunroof's and have been specialising in this for more than 30 years.
On average we do 2-3 Renault Clio sunroof's a month.
They leak in the older shape Clio up to 1998 R/S registration and these are normally the electric operated sunroofs but they also leak in the newer model 1998-2005 which normally have the pop-up manual operated sunroof.
The reason being is that they are of poor original fitment.
In-between the framework of the sunroof and the rubber seal they only put in a foam seal as opposed to sealing it with a watertight silicone sealer.
This foam seal over a period of time disintegrates and then the water leaks through to the interior of the car.
Our technicians would remove the complete roof from the vehicle, allowing total cleaning of parts, priming respective areas and refitting using a lifetime sealant.
For a quote or to ask any questions please call on 01245 490590 or free phone 0800 770 880.
Sometimes the rubber seal has also been badly damaged due to the foam seal not protecting it so you may need to replace this too. We keep in stock the older style rubber, but you would need to obtain the newer style from a Renault dealer.
But, most times we can just do the reseal without having to replace this.

BETTA WINDSCREENS CLIO 98/05
SUNROOF REPAIRS
Betta Windscreens Stockport Repairs to Renault Clio 98/05 Sunroof
Repair of a sunroof on a Renault clio can be carried out by anyone who likes a bit off a challenge
Tools Needed are ;
• one 10 mm
• ratchet spanner
• one sealer gun
• tube of silicone sealer clear or black is best one
• bottle of white sprit
• old rags to clean up
• glass cleaner
• latex gloves
• bog spreader/plastic card

Lets start, as sunroof fitters we are aware there is a big problem with the Sunroofs in clios so were going to help you fix it. Starting in the driver seat, open the handle on a manual roof, behind the handle you will see the joint in the trim which holds the headlining to the roof. Take hold of the trim by the joint, pull forward and remove the trim. Once the trim is removed the headlining can be pulled down slightly to reveal the 10mm bolts. The housing unit which contains the light is not fixed by screws and can just be pulled down in one complete unit. By holding the head lining down approximately 4 - 5 inches the 10mm ratchet spanner can be used to remove the bolts which hold the lower frame to the upper frame. Once all bolts are removed the sunroof drain pipes which are located in the 2 front corners need to be pushed forward to separate them from the sunroof frame. Once this is achieved the sunroof can now be lifted out starting from the back. Once the sunroof has been removed from the vehicle glass side down you will find that the roof was fitted with a damning tape from the factory, once you have found this you have now found the problem. Remove the damning tape with a flat headed screw driver. Clean the back with white spirits, wait for the spirit to evaporate. Whilst the spirit is evaporating the roof needs to be cleaned any damning tape which is stuck to the roof should be removed. Once dry then we can apply the silicone sealer to the upper frame of the sunroof. Don’t be shy when applying sealant i recommend going round twice. Using a pair of latex gloves pick up the sunroof and replace into position make sure that the sunroof is sat correctly remove gloves enter the car and begin to replace the 10mm bolts. Once all bolts are fully tightened the pipes which are located at the front can be reconnected. The headlining trim can now be put back and the interior light calving can now be pushed back into position. From the outside of the vehicle all excess sealer can be removed with a bog spreader or a plastic card. Do not use a metal scraper as this can scratch the roof. Once excess sealer has been removed using a rag and white spirit clean off the remainder the sealer once this has been achieved spray glass cleaner on glass and paint work and polish up. Job well done.
NOTES
Do not carry out work on a warm day because by the time you have got all the bolts back into the sunroof the sealer will be semi set and this will be hard to remove.
If you are in the Stockport/Greater Manchester area and feel that you are unable to carry out this work we would be happy to carry out this work on your behalf. Price as follows;
Manual £105 + vat
Electric £125 + vat

there is a company in Stockport that will fix the sunroof leak for about £150 - their web site gives full instructions on how to do the job yourself - I recently completed the job in 3 hours - its a challenge but if you have basic DIY skills it is acheivable - I used a good quality silicone to re-seal the roof - the immobiliser, interior lights etc all work as they should.

Hi there i deal with renalt clio,s all the time. This is a very common fault with clio,s.The sunroof is leaking between the sunroof frame and the body of the car,the sunroof frame is bad for warping but not i all cases, the seal between the sunroof and body is a small foam strip thats your problem. The only way to sort this properly it to remove the hole sunroof which means removing all the 10ml bolts that holds it in and disconnecting the drain hoses.Remove the old foam the best replacement sealer is called Butyl tape the only place to get this from is a Windscreen company Recommended place (NATIONAL WINDSCREENS) When applying the tape make sure its even when applying, to much tape and the sunroof frame won,t sit flush with the body of the car before fitting best to heat up the tape with a heat gun this will make the tape soft so when you come to putting the 10ml bolts back in you with pull he frame more close to the body of the car. good luck

does this mean that the p reg clio {poss mk2} only leaks from sunroof, i have been told by renault breaker that they leak from aerial. i bought vthis car cheap, and the courteousy light never worked, got two new bulbs from auto care, still no joy, took light off, found a puddle of water and the light fixing all taped up, no bugger told me bout the leak, i now have mould all over back seats front n/s footwell, so pondering sunroof removal does it really work. i was told use some welding wire which i did, and that this is to be pushed into the sunroof and it will unblock the hoses

re: Leaky Sunroof

I am pleased to advise I have succesfully repaired leaking sunroof on 03 Clio.

As with many, water was entering the vehicle somewhere in the roof lining around the sun visor areas, depending if the car was parked on a camber either passenger seat or driver seat totally soaked and stained, It is my opinion this is due to a poor quality seal that fits between the metal roof and the sunroof frame. Unfortunatly this is no mean task but generally goes as follows |:-

Remove, glass roof, visors, handles, centre console map light, plastic trim on door pillars, roof lining will flap down

This will allow access to fixing bolts on roof frame undo and carefully remove frame, clean area where (faulty seal was fitted) apply a bead approx 6mm to very edge of metal of good quality silicone (i would recommend black, even though i used clear myself i feel it woild look better) refit frame tighten up and fit trim in reverse order.

As i said it is no mean task but i believe the only solution,

good luck

HOW TO STOP THE RENAULT CLIO SUNROOF LEAKING....

I HAVE FOR MONTHS BEEN TRYING TO FIND OUT WERE ON EARTH THE WATER WAS COMING IT....

WELL IT SEEMS USING CLEAR BATHROOM SEALANT WILL DO THE TRICK ON THE FOLLOWING AREAS:-
ON THE GLASS PART OF THE SUNROOF, YOU WILL SEE TWO LUGS THAT SECURE INTO THE FRAME OF THE CAR, ON THE GLASS PART YOU WILL SEE TWO BOLTS, COVERED OVER BY A PLASTIC CAP, PUT THE SEALANT AROUND THE PLASTIC CAPS NEXT TO THE GLASS PART OF THE SUNROOF.
NEXT;-
PUTTING SEALANT AROUND THE BLACK PLASTIC RIM AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE SUNROOF, THAT SITS ON THE PART OF THE ROOF.
NEXT;-
REMOVE THE GLASS RUNROOF FROM THE CAR.....
YOU WILL SEE A RUBBER SEAL THAT GOES AROUND THE OUTER FRAME OF THE OPEN SUNROOF, PUT SEALANT ROUND THE EDGE, NEXT TO THE CAR FRAME AND THE RUBBER SEAL.

JOB DONE!!!!

Betta Windsrceens Stockport have been repairing sunroofs for 30 years. What i will tell you is both the mk1 and mk2 clios have a problem with the sunroofs.
The sunroof needs to be taken out cleaned damming seal on frame removed and fitted back with silicone sealer excess sealer clean of with white sprite no need to remove head lineing if fitted with 10 mm bolts use a ratchet spanner. Mk1 clios also leak from the arial remove and reseal. And mk1 & mk2 have a problem with the bulk head filling up with water. Open bonnet on the back of the bulk head is a hose about 6 inches long which gets blocked un block and the water can drain like it did the day the car left the factory. bettabob

My car is a Clio 1.2i 3-door Oasis with manual roof. In taking the roof out, I noticed that there is NO DRAINAGE whatsoever. No pipes, holes, grills, anything.

Anyway, this is how I fixed mine:

This is for the MANUAL ROOF only.
I have no idea if the electric roof is the same.

This method is not for the squeamish, as you will be cutting the interior roof liner. If you have the time and the patience, you can remove the entire liner.
However, be warned that it is stuck to the roof with mastick, will take time to remove and is susceptable to damage if not done with extreme care.

**** DISCLAIMER ****
This is provided as advice only. This appears to have worked on my Clio 3-Door with manual sunroof. I cannot claim that this will work on this, or any other variation.
All I am doing is passing on how I fixed my leak. No guarentee, warranty or success rate is implied or expressed. You break it or get it wrong, don't come looking for me.

You will need:
To allow roughly four hours to do the job and another 24 for the sealant to cure.
T20 Torx Screwdriver
10 mm Spanner or socket
Stanley knife
Another person
Thompson Drain and roof Sealant (B&Q with the gutters) and dispensing gun
A garage or car cover is useful - just in case. ;-)
A driveway makes life a lot easier, especially when removing the sunroof itself. (You can have the doors open without worrying about passing traffic)
Drill and 5mm Steel bit
A fan heater if you're doing this on a cold day
24 hours without a car
White Spirit
Cloths
Patience
To read these instructions through, twice, before you even think of starting.

Remove top of dashboard (open doors remove 1 screw from each end of dash, remove 3 across top, remove dash).
Undo screws at bottom of A-Pillar covers by windscreen.
Remove grab handles (front and back) (pop-open panels at each end).
Remove sunvisors and retention clips (3 screws each in total, clips are a pain to remove).
Remove centre roof unit (5 screws, inc winder).
Remove black rubber from round the inside of the sunroof, where it connects to the roof liner.
Remove plastic top door trim completely (pops out).
Cut roof liner 3 inches back from where the sunroof "hump" is.
Carefully split the 2 halves of liner (mastick has been used to bond to the roof).
(2 People) Carefully remove front section of liner from car (is held in place by the white clips used to hold the door trims in place).
Remove 8 x 10mm bolts from exposed inner sunroof mounting. (4 from the front and 4 from the back)
(2 People, 1 holding, 1 removing) Remove remainder of bolts.
Carefully remove inner sunroof mounting from car (carefully as could be full of water!).
(2 People outside, 1 either side of car, both front windows open) hand thru window, push rear of sunroof up, push sunroof towards back of car and remove.
Lay the outside section of the sunroof upside down and support at either end. (otherwise you are letting the glass take all the weight.)
Wipe away all traces of water and dirt etc from the inside of the roof (makes possible future tracing easier).
Clean 2" round the edge of the hold in the roof, make sure it's completely clear. (You might see a mark in the paint from the original seal).
Now clean it again. You must be 100% sure that this it completely clear of debris.
Clean the inner mounting. Drill a couple of 5mm holes vertically about 10mm behind the rubber located at the front corners. (These will be your inspection holes. Saves waiting to see if the inner mounting fills up to see if you've been successful.)
Clean the underside of the black plastic edge section, especially the existing seal
Now clean it again. You must be 100% sure that this it completely clear of debrise.
(2 People) replace the outside section of sunroof
(2 people) replace the inside section of sunroof, all bolts - HOWEVER: only do the bolts up 2 and 1/2 turns.
Cut the nozzle of the sealant to allow a 6 mm bead
(2 people) 1 person inside pushing the whole sunroof up, so the outside is lifted clear of the bodywork. 1 person starting in the middle at the back of the unit, dispense the sealant as deeply as possible (don't be shy with the sealant: better too much than not enough). When you arrive back at the start, ensure your new seal overlaps with itself. Go round again
Once the sealant is done, tighten all the bolts on the inner section of sunroof.
Remove excess sealant using white spirit and cloths.
If it's a cold day, run the fan heater inside the car for about 4-5 hours, prop the heater on the steering wheel so the air-flow is directed at the sun-roof. (you need to alternate pointing at different sides of the car.)
Leave for 24 hours (the curing time of the sealant) as in DO NOT drive the car. The seal needs to be as good as possible, so it needs not to be disturbed.
After 24 hours, wash the car. DO NOT JET WASH THE SUNROOF!
Check the 5mm inspection holes to see if the leak has persisted. If it has, you did something wrong or your car/sunroof are badly warped!
If all is dry, reassemble the interior (reverse order - so roof liner first. You might want to put some form of grip-fix/no nails on the top of the liner, but it's not a necessity)

If you want to leave the liner out for a week or so to have a longer time to check for leaks, that's down to you. We were happy to drive around sans-liner to ensure the job was sucessful.

The Thompson sealant was chosen as is it supposed to be rubber-based and quite flexible once cured. Alot of other sealants were either not flexible enough or were not designed for "constant wet use".

We did weigh-up putting the sealant on before replacing the roof to ensure that it got right into the corner where the our section goes through the bodywork. The only concern we had with this was the disturbance of the sealant as the roof was replaced, as it needs to be angled in, not just dropped in.

Good Luck!

I would refer to Allen's (August 2008) mention on this site, of being able to repair a leaking sunroof in a Renault Clio. Allen does not respond to my email(unable to deliver message), and I can only assume his email address is no longer in use. I have established that the seal in the roof aperture is not the problem(costly replacement made no difference). Allen appeared to have resolved the issue, and offered photo's showing how to repair the leak. Has anyone else been able to fix a similar leak? It seems obvious to me this is a common and indemic fault and has something to do with the method used when cutting out roof void and the fitting the sunroof, which I believe is carried out, with a factory fitting, after coming off the assembly line.
My car is a Renault Clio 2002, with an electric sunroof. Most certainly there are two drain holes for this roof fitting, which run from the front of the roof aperture, behind the pillars on each side of the windscreen, and end up in the wheel arches of the front wheels. Both of the drains,on my car, run freely when tested with running water when applied to the car roof, but some part of the flow is obviously entering the inside of the car, and emerges close to the top of the visors. This is what is happening when it rains, and requires the front seats to have pemanent waterproof covers. I shudder to think as to what is happening to the inside of the metal of the car roof, for it can only lead to rust and corrosion! Stripping back the headlining would appear to be a way of exposing the area where the water is coming into the car interior, and so aid repair, but I wouldn't know where to start! Some kind person out there could possibly have the answer to this problem. It certainly will not be Renault, for they deny there are any such indemic problems of this nature. Fred 23 Jan.2009

Does anyone know if the sunroof drain pipes of a Renault Clio extend all the way down the front pillars? My sunroof has been leaking above the driver side sun visor for a while now. After removing the sunroof and looking under the internal roof cover, it look like the drains empty straight into the roof space. A few years ago the entire roof was replaced after a minor accident. I am wondering whether the tubes had not been reconnected?

With regards to Ian Macafee's answer - thank you. I knew where the outlets were roughly, but without mentioning the screws I'd have never found what I should've been looking for.

On my 1999 Scenic the screws are T15 torx screws. Most socket sets will have bits for these. When I peeled back the cowling I found 90k miles of wet mucky sand that had filled the void between the cowl and the wheel arch right up to the drain outlet - which accounts for why in this foul summer rain the car has been oozing water. Now I just need to find a way to drain it out of the underfloor storage... I'm pondering cat litter.

MK1 clios i meant, not sure about mk2 or mk3 clios. In the mk1 clios all there is, is a soft sponge. That when very wet lets the water run to the front center of sunroof. There down through the light/winder/centrol locking/alarm (if fitted) console. If plenty of water can drench the headlining. Renault = cheap nasty build quality. Whats more there is no way you can build on a drain channel yourself. Even if you choose to diy sunroof removal. The only answer is fix the leak or replace the sunrof. Any sunroof rattle usualy indicates a warped sunroof frame. This means a replace sunroof for new. Or you could stick it down for good with plumbing tape such as denso tape. Or good flexable plumbing sealant. Not silicone ones as they can shrink and somtimes peel away. You'll need a sealant that is very flexible adhears to rubber, glass and metal. Without corrosion of either.

On a manual sun-roof, the tubes are at the front corners of the sunroof. It will be necessary to take the glass out to get at them. This is done by removing the two screws that fix the handle to the glass.
My sun-roof has leaked for some time now and I have replaced seal twice, cleared out tubes and it still leaks! I think the internal seal in between the two frames has become porous, This necessitates a complete new sun-roof at a cost of approx. £600.00!!! Enjoy.

I suggest you go to bottom of inner wing, behind front wheels, and remove screws retaining plastic. Peel back, and I bet you find packed mud, blocking lower end of droin tubes. Do this both sides of car. If this does not work, remove rooflining (front only, peel it down) and inspect lower side of sunroof. Water can leak from metal joins, pipes or plastic sections. If nothing obvious, just seal up the roof using clear silicone. That's the end story with my Megane (02)
