How to remove brake drum on Ford Ka2?

I need to inspect the brake linings on a 1997 Ford Ka2. There is what looks like a centre nut which is enclosed in metal casing in the shape of a nut. Can you explain the correct procedure for removing this to get the drum removed to inspect the brake shoes ?

I read in another forum that the best approach here is to remove the 4 mounting bolts at the back of the drum. Then pull off the whole drum as one part including the bearing. This will apparently leave the shoes in place allowing you to inspect/replace them. I haven't yet tried this and it sounds an unusual way to access the brake shoes. Does anyone else have any info on this method??

Nigel - many thanks - ford don't obviously think reusing parts for this area is a good idea.

Hi Brian, you have to lever the cap off it will be destroyed in the process so purchase new ones before you start, the centre hub nut is torqued to 175ft/lbs or 235Nm so make sure you have three shredded wheat for breakfast!! and you will probably need a puller to get the drum off the stub axle
