If you have a sooted gas appliance switch it off immediately and call a gas safe registered engineer to de soot it and service it . Soot is evidence of incomplete combustion and it could be producing dangerous amount of carbon monoxide. Better an expensive repair/new boiler than dead !

my boiler keeps cutting out and its due to a sooted up heat exchanger but now british gas under their homecare agreement dont clean it. in the past they have cleaned it. but now they dont strip it down.

pointless having the cover really.

yeah there's a pair of terminals in a black plastic block directly behind the gas button you hold. Insert a small wood screw to join the electrical connections together, it's a bit of a scary sounding bodge but works perfectly. If your gas supply runs out, the button still functions correctly- as for any other aspect, I couldn't say but it will get you working. This boiler, as with my old BMW-5 series totally eluded a host of experts (paid) and as always I end up discovering the fault myself. It's infuriating. Good luck with your heat! Anyway, I'm converting to coal. Gas is a rip off and those "fuel saver" boilers are monsters.

Sounds like your thermocouple is broken, just check that the flame is on the thermocouple as it only works when the flame is on it, this has a magnetic affect and in turn holds the gas valve open. Don't go taking cases off and cleaning heat exchangers you could do something wrong and not know it and cause yourself all sorts of trouble!!! Leave it to corgi Reg engineers

Hi, we had this problem with our old glow worm fuel saver mark 2. I had an engineer out who took off the casings and cleaned out the heat exchanger at the very top of the boiler. This did the trick for 12 months, I have just had to clean it again today as it wouldn't stay lit. If you are technically minded it really isn't that difficult a job, as you are not disconnecting any gas or water pipes. If you remove the outer casing (one screw) and then the front panel (4 screws) you will see the burners and at the very top the heat exchanger which looks like a small car radiator. Remove the two wing nuts on the two diagonal stays above the heat exchanger, and slide out the rectangular cover that this is holding. The heat exchanger should now be fully exposed both above and below. Get an implement that is not metal as you do not want to damage the delicate elements of the heat exchanger - I used a drinking straw. Scrape as much soot off as you can and then use a soft brush to remove the dust, whilst holding a vacuum cleaner nozzle below to catch the soot. Carefully re-assemble and re-ignite the boiler. If it still doesnt stay lit after this you will need to contact an engineer. Ours is okay though after this.

Sure - the thermocouple has broken or its simply not positioned in the gas flame. Its a cheap part but repairs should only be done by your CORGI man.
