Does using a paint roller always make such a mess?

I used a paint roller today for the first time & vowed never again! The whole area (floor & me) was covered with a fine mist of paint spots, the painted area was covered with what looked like bubbles, a weird textured finish. I had to go over it with a brush to even it out. What am I doing wrong? The wall is new plaster & I diluted the emulsion slightly for the first coat. Will it get better when I get to the undiluted coat? Help, I've got loads of walls to do & it'll take forever with a brush. Thanks

1-cover all furniture 2-wear old clothes 3-buy good paint like glidden,crown or dulux...not wilkinsons. 4-spend a few quid more on a descent roller...not a 1-99 special

I remember the film! A part played beautifully by Will Ferrell in the 2005 musical remake. I had the priviledge of seeing Nathan Lane live in the London theatre version. Funny, funny, funny!
Anyway, back to rollers. Thanks for the help, I'll try again when I get to the undiluted coats & see what happens.

Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes

Yes if you're new at rolling
Yes if you use diluted paint
Yes if you overload the roller
Yes if you're over enthusiastic with the action

The solution of course is to wear overalls and put down dust sheets and try not to do too many of the things that cause splashes.

When you get used to them rollers are no messier than a brush especially with unprimed paint and they're several times faster. Which reminds me of some film dialogue...

Mel Brooks' 1968 movie The Producers. Brooks' slapstick Nazi complains,

"Hitler was a better dancer than Churchill; Hitler was a better dresser than Churchill; Hitler was a better painter than Churchill: he could paint a whole apartment in one afternoon, two coats."
