your in for the long haul with that one i"m afraid mate. either remove it or get a plasterer in. believe me you wont regret it when you see the finish. You might try a few coats of P.V.A. once youve spent months sanding down the lumps wearing a resporator all day. Personally I know what option I"d go for.

i also have bad artex on ceilings and some walls. we wanted to tackle one bedroom first. we asked the housing association for an estimate for work to be done which included boarding over the artex ceiling and plastering.they told me the artex contained a small amount of asbestos even though 4 years previous they told me it was safe.a couple of months ago an inspector told us just to go ahead and board it, now they are saying we cant do that because it is covering the problem andthey would have to remove the ceiling.even though we are tenants they were going to charge us £2,400 to which i said was a complete joke.they are telling us to leave things as they are and the artex is safe.it is cracking in places,it is terrible.there must be a solution.are they causing unnecessary worry?

hi i agree with gary although before chipping of any artex i would get it tested for asbestos, especialy if you think the artex is old

a thin coat of finish plaster will sort it out.

Get yourself a 5 inch solid flat scapper, scape of the nibs and bits. when your happy with that buy yourself a caulking board, a bag of Easy Fill and a filling knife. Get yourself a flat bottom bucket or painters kettle and mix up the easy fill with water(not too wet, quite thick) and with your caulking board skim it over the ceiling, may have to skim it 2 or 3 times.
