Timing after vertical gear replacement?

On a Singer 466 sewing machine, I've removed the broken vertical gear (#155819) and its shaft. Once I re-insert the shaft and replace the gear, how do I set the timing? What else has to be done?

I'm talking about the gear at the top of the vertical shaft. The shaft runs down to drive a belt at the bottom of the machine that drives the bobbin.

What vertical gear are you talking about, the one one the topshaft or the one on the bottom shaft underneath the raceway. drivewithken@blueyonder.co.uk
