How can i remove alternator from 2002 1.4 xsara?

i would blame the battery itself,firstly check that the battery hasnt dried up.open the service panels on the top of the battery and check the levels of the acid.if low then this is your prob.you will need to top up with distilled water and then jump start and allow to recharge on a long run.if the battery aint serviceable, then try another battery that you know to be good.be very carefull when dealing with battery acid.if the car runs with battery disconnected then your alternator is fine, if not then its buggered.
