Mend Morphy Richards Time Failed Unit

Morphy Richards Trouser Press 49200?

Hi, I have a trouser press press model above, it looks as if the time has failed - it's an obsolete unit, do we know where a diagram or spares service unti might be obtained from please ?

Thanks - Peter

I seem to have the blown resistor problem. There seems to be some confusion about the correct value, 1.5Kohms? How well have repairs lasted?

Foot as broken off where can I find a replacement for model No49110

A previous answer concerning the resistor value is in error-----'The correct value is in fact 1.5kOhms and the colour code is brown, green, orange'.---- Brown Green Orange is 15Kohm. What is the actual value of the resistor? Mine has burnt out too and I cannot make out the colours.

If anybody out there wants to mend their trouser press, the easiest method is to replace the control unit with a mechanical wind-up type of electrical timer. I got mine from AliExpress, costing about $9.00. Ali called them 'kitchen timers'. It only required cutting and joining 4 wires and drilling a couple of holes for the fixing screws. The unit I got gives me any time up to 60 minutes.

Further to my last.
Merlin has drawn out the circuit diagram for me, if you would like a copy you may contact me. rabbit(at)dsl.pipex.com

ERRATA!!: Following Gary's identification of the problem resistor and my subsequent advice I have looked at the problem again and consulted my own electronics whizz-kid (Merlin). He immediately pointed out that the value of the resistor was incorrect as (using simple Ohms Law) it would have to draw >1.5 amps.
The correct value is in fact 1.5kOhms and the colour code is brown, green, orange. The original problem resistor must have got so hot the the orange band turned brown. Also if the value of the resistor fitted was 150 Ohms it would destroy the Zener diode. Both of these components are available cheaply in Maplins from stock. When buying the resistor go for a 3 watt ceramic type, a few pence more but better for the job and won't fail.
Gary...sorry I didn't get to this earlier mate!

Gary, all you needed to do was to go into Maplin and buy a couple of 2watt 330ohm metal film resistors (£1.38) and put them in parallel and you have 165 ohms which is well within the tolerance of the original.
*BUT* this resistor doesn't just blow for no reason and indicates a fault elsewhere on the board.

Gary, if your 2watt resistor went up in smoke so will a 0.5watt resistor.
If you look at the rating plate the press is only supposed to consume 350watts at 240volts so if the resistor is smoking almost immediately then there is probably a short circuit elsewhere in the press.
The value of the resistor is 160ohms (brown/green/brown) at 5%tolerance (the gold ring).
The tolerance figure in this case is not too important.

Hi Could anyone please tell me if the Morphy Richards 49200 trouser press takes out the creases in the trousers as mine seems not to be able to do it. However it does get warm

I have the same problem with my trouser press, model 49110, how did you get on with your repair?

Hi Peter,

Just got the resistor today but no luck. A bit of smoke so no good there. I've searched around the web and found a post relating to the same problem but they are looking for a 1/2W resistor and not the 2W which I bought. I am trying again and have ordered the 1/2W version. This is the link:-

Will post results when the resistors all 100 of them arrive...

Hi Peter,

I have the same problem with the timer. One off my resistors has burnt out. I have visited Maplins but they were of no use. I have eventually tracked down the resistor I need in America although it hasn't arrived as yet and I'm not 100% sure it is correct. The burnt out resistor on mine is the large one with the bands coloured Brown, Green, Brown & Gold. Below is a link to the site I found the resistor although they only come in packs of 50. The cost was still only $1.99 plus $4.40 p&p

http://www.opamp-electronics.com/~opamp/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22_27_61&products_id=567

This link was for 10 at only at $1.49 so even better...

As I say I haven't received them yet so can't say it will work but will try to post the results - Good or Bad....
