how to replace headlight bulbs on Citroen Xsara?

How on earth do you replace the bulbs on my 01 51 plate citroen Xsara, there seems to be no room to get in, do I have to take out the whole unit?
thanks, Dave.

If the new bulb isn't working...check the 15 amp fuses ( fuse box under bonnet behind headlight ) i had to check all 15 amp ones as the owners book didn't quite identify the one required. Got it on 3rd go....phew. It will likely have blown along with the bulb. Halfords replaced my bulb easily but mention the fuse!
Working well now. A wee tip...there is a little pair of yellow plastic tweezers in the internal fuse-box ( pull off plastic panel near RH door low on drivers side ) these tweezers will help to remove fuses...and just in case...15 amp fuses are blue in colour. Good luck.

If it is the dip bulb that has gone it isnt too bad to replace. The full beam one is not too easy unless you have very small hands. First thing to do is pack around the bulb holder with foam because if you drop the bulb it could dissapear into the great unkown then you have to take headlight out to retrieve it.First you will need a bit of tube to fit over bulb get a mirror a motorcycle mirror is ideal and a torch. Place the mirror where you can see inside bulb holder fix it into place with a buldog clip shine torch into mirror put bulb into holder using the tube clip wire bulb hoders into place replace power cable onto bulb and check fuse job done

the answer to you question is never buy a citroen ever again. i'm coming to the conclusion after reading lots of ideas that i have to take the front bumper off. my mot due next week, and unless i can find a small child with long fingers and x-ray vision, i gotta do it the hard way.

Hi Neil. Don't think I have ever replaced the main bulb, but I have a suggestion, which is that using long (i.e. 10 or 12 in.) locking surgical forceps might help. There are loads of these on the fishing section of ebay. You can use them to hold the component instead of trying to get your hand in there.

Very helpful Jim it works thank you, but may I add that if you wear glasses try using a mirror. Now how about the main beam bulb?? that's lower down and the opening is also a lot smaller, any idea's ??? I've cut my hand trying to fix this one and still not managed it, got it out, changed bulb but cannot get it back.

OK -- Assuming it is the same as my slightly later model:

- Take off the circular plastic protector from the rear of the assembly, to expose the plug connector attached to the back of the bulb.
- Ease the plug off the bulb.
- The bulb is held in place by a wire clip. ABOVE the bulb, push the looped ends of this clip sideways in opposite directions (i.e. away from axis of the bulb). This will push the looped ends off the metal T-piece which was hoding them in position.
- With the ends of the clip now free, it will pivot downwards and release the bulb.

(First time I had to do this it took me ages to work it out. If you have a torch and get your line of vision down as low as possible under the bonnet you can just about see the ends of the clip and how it's held in place.)

Really not an answer but a question for both Darren and Dave who had the problem that I have now got on my 02 Xsara Estate - How did you do it? all I have succeeded doing is bruising my hands which after Chemo is not really a clever thing to do.

HELPFUL ADVICE WOULD REALLY BE APPRECIATED
