plastering?

As a single parent I tend to attempt all the diy jobs at home. I am looking into booking onto a introduction to plastering course in Oct at my local college which is one day a week for 6 weeks total of 36 hours. People tell me not to bother as i will not master this within this time scale. I am not looking to do this as a full time career all i want to do is be able to plaster all the walls in my house as they are in a bad state and cannot afford a plasterer. Can someone please advise if i would be wasting my money by doing this course or should i go for it and hope i get some use out of it and will be able to do my walls in my home

i am a plasterer for 26 years and i am still learning as there is 1000,s of different things to master so i would intend to agree with the guy who said bribe a plasterer to do the job cheap and then watch and learn as it is difficult to trowel a wall to a perfect finish or also float a sand and cement wall it took me years to master the trade so dont waste your money on them silly courses as its not long enough

do the course u will know more after the course than u did before, but 36 hrs is no time to master any trade not even for a diy project, but u are trying so go 4 it. i would offer but u could be any where.

As a builder i see many trades come and go, some good some bad, do the course, a little knowledge is better than none, personally i dont think you can pick it up in 36 hours, but keep doing it, and it will come, good girl for trying.

Personally I think the course will be too basic and not give what you require. 36 hours isn't long enough to master any skill. I suggest you use your charm to persuade / bribe a local plasterer into letting you watch him work ( then in due course ask to have a try). You will learn a lot by watching, then just try your skills on small walls until confidence grows.

don't waste your money.
as they say there is an art to plastering i've had people come to me who have been on much longer courses and still can't pick it up.
it takes many years to be able to float and set a wall.

good luck with what you choose.
