Mend Renault 5 Automatic Transmission

Renault 5,?

I have just bought a renault 5 1988 it is automatic and will not move in to its top gears, there is a light on the dash board that is always on (computer diagnostics?) Do I have to go to a renault dealer to find out the cause?
