i have a vauxhall omega 2.0 went to london last week tempreture fine on motorway but as soon as i hit traffic it started to over heat,also happened the other day went to bath 150 miles fine on the motorway till i hit traffic then started to overheat fan cuts in as it should do so not that any ideas

keep cycle no of engine not exceeding 3000cycle/min so heat production will decrease

Hi I'm Ade had the same problem changed thermostat now changing water pump was told it's a common fault the dealer as assured me that the both usually go together awaiting for car to return from garage with new pump to see if that works il let you know if it's resolved

sounds like water pump or slight obstruction check all pipes and especially pump + thermo

Probably a bit late to help you but may help somebody else. The oil pick up pipe has a metal "tea strainer" to collect large particles before they get to the oil pump. This part is "cup" shaped and collects debris until the time arrives that it can no longer suck oil up fast enough to supply the engine. drain the oil, remove the lower part of the sump, remove the pick up pipe and bracket and wash it out. about an hours work in total.

suspect head gaskets are letting by under heavy loads, which is expensive if you get a garage to do it, alternatively the radiator could be a little clogged causing higher tempertures under heavy loads but not at nominal loading on the engine. Try flushing the cooling system and then add a flushing agent and leaving for a week or so and then flush again before refilling with correct coolant and water mix. If this dosent rectify the problem then it probably the head gaskets on there way out, which could go on for ages like they are or could let go tomorrow.

The thermostat is new, fitted on my instructionat a cost of over £300 by the Vauxhall main dealer, so it had better be right! Fitting the new one made no difference. Everything else checked except the water pump - dealer's view is that a water pump either works or it doesn't (my experience too), and this is a 'nearly OK' problem - at 60 mph it doesn't overheat, only at 80+ or otherwise working hard. I am not losing coolant. I was hoping to find someone who had similar symptoms.

Make sure the thermostat is the right one and is in the right way. Make sure you have enough coolant and the right mixture of cooolant and water. Check to make sure your clutch fan or electric fan is operating properly. Make sure your water pump is working and not leaking. There is a weep hole at the bottom of the water pump. That should not be wet. Make sure your not getting water in the oil, it will be brownish or foamy, not a good sign( bad head gaskets). These are some things to check.
