Mend Dyson DC05 Vacuum Motor

Remove wheels on Dyson DC05 to get to the motor?

My 3 year old Dyson DC05 had a "Nut Like" smell when it was on. It refused to turn off with the foot switch & I had to pull the plug to stop it. After 15 min I plugged it in & heard a click sound, like a relay. Now it will not work at all. I believe it is either the motor or a relay thermal switch. I cannot find the way to remove the large wheels so I can get to the screws that open the housing to the motor. Any help appreciated.

I have a Dyson DC19 with the same sort of wheels. Yes, thanks to all here, the 'stick and twist' method works, and, without any force! Use a long slim screwdriver to bend the wheel away enough from the housing to be able to look inside. Keep holding. At the same time use a stronger 7mm blade screwdriver to stick between the wheel housing rim and the wheel. Just twist. The wheel will start to ease out. Repeat the same along the rim and wheel. It's easier to do than to describe. The twisting screwdriver must be exactly in the right place between rim and wheel. Then no force is needed.
You can see here what the wheels actually look like inside before dismantling.

The wheels are designed to be pulled off, just got to use a bit of muscle! Helps if you turn the wheel as you pull.

I found that one of the wheels on my Dyson DC05 could be levered off if the inside lugs of the axle were compressed with pliers. With the other wheel the lugs were obscured by the plastic moulding. I got round this by looping a piece of string around the lugs - one person pulls the string tight to compress the lugs, while person two levers the wheel off.

Fred's solution worked easily for me. Pull the edge of the wheel away from the casing and get a big flat screwdriver up between the wheel and axle, then twist. POP - and it comes away!

I also had to remove the wheels, not to get to the motor, but to fix a cable problem (I fixed it).

Initially I was a bit disappointed with the amount of pressure I had to exert and I feared I would crack something (either my fingers or the Dyson). But reading the comments here and in other places I realized that the plastic is strong, sturdy and flexible enough to insert two large-ish screwdrivers behind the wheel, in diametrically opposite locations, and prise the wheel until it popped off. Just be steady when you do it, nice and easy will do it!

This is the way to do it, don't bend the wheels.
In the center of the wheel is a plastic plug.
Remove this plug using a small flat bladed screw driver, two are useful.
Wedge the blade in between the plug and the wheel and lever the plug out.
Once the plug is out, the wheel can be pulled off with a little pressure.

I tried levering the wheels off but it just feels like something will break - instead I used a screwdriver to hold them away from the body so I could undo the star screws behind them. I undid 2 behind each wheel and 1 behind the dust chamber and the whole thing came apart, you have to bend the wheels again to take the top part of the body off. You can now see how the wheels are held in place, If I can get them off I will cos then it will make screwing it all back together again easier and the last thing of all will then be whacking the wheels back on!

Use a tool to hold the wheels away from the body and remove the two screws that you can see between the wheels and the body. The whole motor then drops out. The wheels need to be prised off from the inside as they are held on by splayed axles with big lips!

The flat bladed method above does work, but you risk breaking the wheel. An alternative method is to squeeze your star-bit screwdriver in behind the wheel and undo the two screws without taking off the wheel. The wheel should easily bend enough for you to do this.

I have found it is much easier to do with just brute force. If you pull the wheel away from the chassis as much as possible and remove the two screws you can just pull hard and the wheels and they pop off. You will see once you have the wheel in your hand why this does not damge them which i was at first worried it would. I was never able to do this with a screwdriver

With a large Flat bladed screw driver (And I mean Large) stick this between the wheel and the housing, position the flat tip on axel between the wheel and housing and twist and the wheel should just pop off, and hey presto you have access to the star driver screws.
