None of below helped on my 4GB matsui boot error but this did:
Matsui connected to USB, recogniced as E:drive
Start command prompt and give command
format E: /FS:FAT

When it is done, player started normally. Then I have to format the player memory again using player menu function "Format".

After three weeks of repeatedly trying to make my broken player (stuck on CheckingDisk) work, I just followed Phil Wade's fix, to while away the time and to be able to tell myself "Well, I tried", and to my absolute amazement it worked and is playing merrily along!

So it's a HUGE thank you to Phil!

Do you have a fully working Matsui Mat 140MR, mp3 player and software disk that come with player.

I am looking for the software that came with the mp3 player as the disk that I got has crack and the program will no longer work. If you are able to help me with a copy of the software then you can email: roland_55@hotmail.co.uk

When emailing please make the subject line very clear as I received a lot of junk mail and would not like to miss your mail.
Thank you.

Has anyone find a solution to the Matsui Mat 140MR problems. Has anyone got an updated firmware for the above model of mp3 player.

I,too have had agro with boot errors, etc. I formatted mp3 player--still would not work x2. Wondered if (unlike other mp3 players 1 have had) it would not work with wma type files.
installed 1.2 gb of mp3 files without any problem, and seemed to access them ok.

I formatted one of our Matsui 4gb mp3 players by mistake (!doh!), using a laptop, and received the dreaded 'Boot Error' message on the Matsui, which then stuck.

To fix it try this:-

1 / Remove battery and connect to PC via USB lead, PC should still recognise the player and give you a drive letter

2 / Right click the drive in Windows Explorer and format it using FAT32

3 / copy a few some mp3s to the Matsui

4 / eject the Matsui, disconnect it and replace battery

Ours then worked normally, rebuilding the database and playing as normal.

First i have tried the trick with plugging it into PC during holding M.. no success, well it had some success at least PC has found it... then i have tried "phil wades method", but i had the same result as goofy had, so i have tried to format it, then unplug it from PC and than again plug it, than i have copied some MP3s and now it is finaly working...

But certainly this MP3 player is crap....

You don't necessarily have to do format the MP3 player as Phill Wade suggests. I was able to fix mine just by connecting it to Windows XP, opening a command prompt, typing

chkdsk E: /f

(where E can be replaced by whatever drive letter your mp3 player is assigned)

This got rid of the boot error message, and I didn't lose any data in the process.

Thanks for the suggestion Phil.

Sadly mine can't be cured in the way you describe but it may help others.

I get the following error message after running chkdsk:

"The type of file system is RAW".
"CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives"

Clearly my flash drive appears to be a little bit more corrupt than expected.

I had similar problems e.g. Boot Error, permanent Checking Disk and folders that were inaccessible in Windows.

To cure these I did the following:

1. Removed battery
2. Connected player to Windows XP machine
3. Started command prompt
4. Entered chkdsk D: /f (replace D: with the drive letter that your drive connects as)
5. Answered "N" to lost chains as files question
6. Removed drive using the "Safely remove hardware option"
7. Replaced battery and powered on drive
8. Selected the following option:
Set --> Format Drive --> OK
9. After formatting, the player restarts
10. Shut down player
11. Removed battery
12. Connected to PC and added music
13. Everything was OK

The problems seem to occur because the battery flattens whilst starting up or it switches itself on as it is removed from the PC - that’s why I remove the battery before connecting.

Hope this helps you as well.

Skaos earlier in the post suggested a reinstall of firmware. Has anyone tried this?

My MAT 140MR has the classic Boot Error problem that many others seem to be suffering. The problem I have is that the stupdaterapp.exe program that normally recognises the 1GB or 2GB models [and you then use this application to reformat and reinstall firmware] appears not to recognise the 4GB version. The 'search light' just continues to move back and forth. I've left it seraching for 5 minutes but with no success.

So has anyone succeeded in getting stuapdaterapp to recognise their 4GB? It would even be useful if someone tried it on a working player. You don't need to go through the whole routine just enough to let me know that you succeeded in reading the firmware on your player, then at least I'd know that my MP3 required a bit more work to recover it.

I originally bought the 2gb model, which went wrong, and I exchanged 3 times, before paying an extra £5 for this 4gb model. Which has now gone wrong. I'm taking it back tomorrow, except this time it actually seems to have lost the data on the stick - with the other players I could still use it as a USB stick when it stopped working. This one says its corrupt and unreadable. And I cant recover the data.

Some of you may have to reinstall the firmware, read post 171 on page 12 on how to reflash the player in this link:
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6035_102-0.html?forumID=71&threadID=218044&start=0
This firmware is for the lower capacity models, so before flashing, check that your firmware version is 2.611 CMA061111.

When using Windows Vista I installed 1000 songs, so I thought...but when I tried to find on Matsui...No Joy! even ended up with Boot Error.

I reformatted on Windows XP re-created my folders (not sure if right but that's what I did) and installed songs from there and all appears OK...Well the songs are there.

What I don't know is how to find the next folder of songs?
Any Help

P.S. The instruction manual is pathetic!!!

In case it helps, I seemed to be able to recover mine from a permanent "CheckingDisk..." state by doing the following:

- First turn it off by removing and then replacing the battery
- Hold down the "M" button, plug into your PC, wait a few seconds and release the "M" button
- The drive should appear, allowing you to reformat it etc

In my case some of the sectors were not readable. I used a unix tool to overwrite the whole drive with zeros, and then reformatted it from windows. That seemed to fix the bad sectors and make it work again. Not sure if the issue will reappear again though...

An update on my misfortune.

I get the dreaded 'boot error' when I switch mine on. There is nothing anywhere on the WWW including Matsui's site that tells you how to solve this issue.

I shall never, ever, ever buy another Matsui product.

Same here! Just get CheckingDisc. If I hold down the on button I get Checking database which then goes to Boot Error.
Can't Matsui offer any ideas?

I've just bought one. Big, big mistake. The software goes through the install sequence; is it instaled?

Is it bollox.

When I connect it up I can see the device mapped as a USB device but nothing else.

I really think I've wasted my money on junk.
