Kennwood KX-64W stuck in the play position (no cassette in player)?

I have a Kenwood Stero Double Cassette Deck model KX-64W. It has been in storage for about 5 years. It powers up but is in the play position and there is no cassette in either compartment. A cassette can not be put into the machine. All of the buttons (play, FF, Rev., stop, eject) operate from the front of machine. However, when you engage the play, FF and/or Rev. nothing happens.

Have the same component with the same problem. The Kenwood KX-64W is driven by belts that stretch and deteriorate over time to the point that they either break or cannot drive the operating mechanism (imagine a loose generator belt on a vehicle). I know what the problem is but cannot find replacement drive belts for this and other stereo equipment (specifically a Garrard turntable).
