Mend Mixer Tap Screw

Mono mixer tap??problem!?

We have a mono mixer tap on the bath but it is not alike to the newer types of taps that have the screw in the handle of the tap...
The problem is that the handle turns 360 degrees and we are unable to get seperate hot or cold water.I've tried to look under the handle(but unsure if the handle is supposed to come off) and found a small spring(Rusty and bent) and a small round white plactic bit.The tap keeps dripping.Is the handle supposed to come right off? and is this problem fixable?

with out knowing what make of taps you have makes it differcult.
but the tap head should come off to be able to change the valve inside
they can be a pain if not removed for some years
try spraying wd-40 see if that loosens it.
