Ruined portable DVD player? Still works for a couple seconds..Please help!?

I have an AudioVox portable DVD player. The AC adapter cord snapped so I bought a new universal adapter. Long story short, I plugged it in and it didn't work. So, I ran outside to grab something, came back inside less than 30 seconds later (no joke) and smoke was starting to come out the side of the player. I quickly fixed the problem (I had plugged it in wrong) and turned it back on. It came on, started loading the DVD and cut off the power 3 seconds later. So, it won't stay on for more than 2-3 seconds now. Is it repairable?? I can't afford a new one atm (mine was around $150).
So, can anyone help me out, please?
