How can he fix the Ford transit 120 SWB drivers door lock?

the problem we have is that we cannot open the drivers door. he took apart the door panel and door lock and got it to work for a couple of days, then he locked it one day and couldn't get in that door again. It would open and close perfectly if the van was not locked , but obviously he can't leave it open. Any suggestions please
