I am Kangoo owner and I am absolutely ecstatic overjoyed dancing on the drive. I tried starting the vehicle with the key fob button pressed in (as read here) and it started immediately. I have been struggling and wasting hours of my time for the past 3 years trying to start it. Being an old age pensioner who cannot afford what the garage were telling me it was going to cost I had no choice but to struggle. If this is such a common fault why the hell hasn't Renault corrected it.

i had similiar fault with my Clio, it worked OK untill I put a house key on the same keyring as the Renaullt key. The fault went away after I took the house key off the key ring. Try taking any thing metal off the key ring. And see if that helps.

Anything metal on the same ring as the ignition key disrupts the Rf signal between the car key and the immobilser ariel which is part of the ignition lock.

Hello everyone!
I have a Renault Clio 03 dci expression, I've had an on going immobiliser (what i think is) issue for a good couple of months; last year i had the keys looked at and also new glow plugs. Having recently passed my MOT the garage told me I would have to take the car to Reanult itself to be looked at, however haviing read most the solutions on the internet im inclined to do so.

The red light is flashing when i'm first in the car but when turning the key the light goes to constant. i have tried pushing the button on the key when turning it but to no avail. I used to have the technique of leaving the key in the ignition for around 15-20 minutes turning it off and back on to see the coil light illuminated and the car starting, however with the weather getting colder (seems to worsen the problem) the car is taking longer and longer to start (an hour and 30 minutes this morning & 40 minutes last night.) I have both keys available to me (if this helps the solution) i'd be incredibly grateful if anyone can help me here..I just paid £243 for the MOT and don't really want to pay £500-£1000 to fix the car again considering i only paid £1300 for it

Cheers,
Kyle

I had a problem with my 2003 renault clio yesterday. went to shop and then the car would not start. Solid red light beside the stop on the dash. Thought it was something to do with the immobliser and tried pressing the button while turning the key. NO USE for me. Had to go to work so got the car towed to a garage not far from me. They had the car all day and rang me to say it was going again. They only charged me the £40 towing fee, which i thought was strange..

when i asked what had happened they were not to clear, but what they did tell me was that they disconnected the immobliser under the driver seat(Have a look, looks like a few wires you can take apart) and then connected it again to reset it. They say they waited 2 hours to put the wires together again. but to be honest I think they knew the problem when they went to pick the car up but just wanted the towing fee.

This post is great but just wondering if anyone has any advice for me?!
I've got an S reg 1.2 grande Clio and my key fobs have never worked since I've owned the car due to water damage to the ariel receiver board from the previous owner. Renault wanted an extortionate amount to fix that so have just made do without central locking. Over the last couple of months after driving my car without a problem, I'll go out to my car later that day or the next to hear a kind of hissing noise from under the bonnet, almost like gas is escaping?! Putting the key in the ignition and turning it stops the noise but then the car is totally dead with the imboliser light flashing. I've assumed it's some kind of electrical problem but I've had little luck with any of the suggestions on here. One thing I'm wondering is whether me putting it through the car wash is causing it as the last two times its happened I had taken it to the wash the same day. It's currently sat dead on my driveway yet again, so any suggestions would be welcomed! (Avoiding the car wash is already top of my list!)

Hey,

I had a problem with the car turning over but just not firing up.

So what I did was do some research and found out about the 'TDC sensor'. This thing tells the car when to let fuel into the system, thus letting it start.

I google imaged it to see what I was looking for, found it in the engine, unscrewed the two bolts holding it in, lifted it out and there was a piece of exposed magnet that was covered in crap. Clean this little bit, sand it down a bit to expose some fresh metal and put it all back. My car started straight away!!

You can find the sensor on the passenger side about 6 inches down from the top of the block. It's a fiddly job but once you know what it looks like, you'll find it!

For the record, this was on a R reg 1998 clio, old model.

Hi I'm wondering id any could help me here?

Basically i have a Renault clio its a W reg year 2000 1.2 and it wont start. I called the AA and they said i needed a new key which i have now brought and the problem is still happening. The immobiliser light on the dashboard keeps flashing every time i put the key in. The car turns over but wont start actually start.

Everywhere i go different people are telling me different things, and i have already spent 140 on the new key i dont really want to spend more until i know its going to work. The guy who made my new key said he has only seen this problem once before and he said it could either be the immobiliser itself, the key sensor or the wiring could be flooded.

If any of you could help would be great.

Thanks

My Renault Clio wouldn't start and have just looked at this site. Would like to thank John who posted March 11 as his suggestion has just started my car! Hold central lock button down and push down accelerator at same time for 10-15 secs. Release central locking button, then release accelerator. Then press down accelerator again and start car. This worked for me!

Thanks to a comment earlier in this post, i tried immobiliser-unlock.co.uk...i am always a bit suspicious of forums, but this chap really was amazing!.. Ridiculously helpful, and helped me find that the problem was not my immobiliser and therefore made nothing out of the help...hence my post here to say thank you!

In fact i am going to buy one of his products in any event, because it looks from all the posts over the internet, that it is just a matter of time before the immobiliser breaks down and costs more to fix to say nothing of the missus being potentially stranded!

Hi guys.
My 2001 Clio needs a new key / transponder as mine shorted out the Circuit in the key. Renault charge way to much.
Was wondering, if I brought a second hand key from the dismantlers, swapped the blade over, could i put the key in the ignition for 10 minutes with hope of the transponder / ecu resetting and working??????

Put your key in, leave it on ignition (where the lights on the dashboard come on before your engine starts) leave it on for 10 minutes. turn the ignition off and start engine, job done guarenteed. the immobiliser goes out of sync with the radio code etc etc, it happened to me this morning cos i left it on ignition to defrost the car.

Just had the AA out to my 2002 Dci with this fault, after an hour of fault finding on the starter circuit he narrowed it down to the immobiliser which he said had gone out of sync with the key. To reset it he left the key in with the ignition on for 10 minutes so the ecu re-learnt the key code, and it then started first time. Hope that helps someone.

had the problem in question for last 2 days.

I have had a y reg clio for 3 months and pretty much everytime i went to start it nothing happened but funny clicking noises and flashing lights. Read lots of comments on various sites, was about to torch it when i thought i would just clean inside the key. Fantastic - it has started every time, at least four times a day for e week now - fingers crossed. have also decided to cover the sunroof (factory fitted) with a tarp cover to minimise the rain getting in as had moticed problems much worse after heavy rain. Hope this helps some one as i know how frustrating theses cars can be.

i have had this immobiliser problem for a few months on my w reg clio i was just off to the renault dealer to order a new key at a cost of £180 when i thought i'd check the net. So pleased i did, found a webite where you can order a bit that plugs in under your ash tray which costs £85 quid. was gonna order 1 of these, when i came across this brilliant site. after reading various solutions i thought i'd try the easiest first, put the key in the ignition and turn while holding the central locking button in. worked first time, that stupid flashing red light went out and the car started. Happy day's.

I have a 1997 Renault Clio 1.4RT auto.I too am having the immobiliser problems caused by faulty sunroof and ariel seals.I have the 4 digit immobiliser bypass code and have tried this many times but to no avail.I have replaced keyfob batteries and cleaned IF recievers in the roof lining. The only time it will start is if I remove the immobilizer unit by pulling it out from under the right hand side of the dash board, disconnecting the respective white and blue plugs and then put it back after about an hour or two.The infamous quick flashing seems to be delayed in coming on ,the key fob seems to spring into life and the motor starts. But sadly once I stop the car I have to repeat the process again.I think I am going to have to go for a bypass unit to alleviate this problem once and forall!!! Does anyone have any more ideas? It seems to me that the water ingress from the sunroof and ariel is a design fault and maybe RENAULT should foot the bill!!!

I thought I'd add my experiences! Last week, I wanted to go and pick up a friend to discover that my clio wouldn't start. We only have one key, which would unlock the car but wouldn't switch off the immobiliser. On putting the key in the ignition the immobiliser light on the dashboard would flash wildly and although the engine would turn over, it wouldn't spark. Cue panic as I've had so many problems with this car!!!

I trawled the internet and came across this feed and tried a few options here - holding down the central locking button, accelerator pedal etc. but no luck. I looked at the remote keys company, but over-riding the immobiliser in such a fashion would compromise my insurance so I didn't want to do that even though it seemed like a great solution.

I phoned my local garage and they said to change the battery in the remote as perhaps there wasn't enough power to power an infrared signal, which we did (within the 10 minute allowance to prevent loss of the code) but to no avail. I next phoned our local kwik fit to see if they had anyone who could deal with immobiliser problems. They did, and he diagnosed the issue over the phone: it was a problem with the key transponder, one that happens quite regularly due to the poor design of the key. He suggested that I find an auto locksmith who should be able to help and re-solder some of the parts. It was a friday evening at about 6pm so I called my renault dealer on the off-chance that they'd (somehow!) be able to make me a new key, even if it was going to be £140, but the response was that the car would have to go in for a diagnostic (£29.99 for the first half hour) plus key, plus the car would have to be recovered. No way!!

So we waited over the weekend and then yesterday morning phoned lots of local locksmiths (we live in Birmingham) for quotes. I have to say that they were all very helpful and reassuring: yes, they'd come across the problem before, yes it was very common, yes it was almost certainly the key, yes they'd be able to fix it etc. Most were mobile, which would have been the most convenient option but, naturally, the most expensive. Quotes came in around the £120 mark for a diagnostic (to check the ignition coil etc) and two new keys. However, we found one company, Duplicut, in Sutton Coldfield, http://www.duplicut.co.uk/ who said that if I could get the key to them, they should be able to take the data from the current chip, put it on a new one, put this into my current key and thus solve the problem. I got there yesterday afternoon and waited just 10 minutes for them to do this, came home and the problem was solved!!! They had replaced the chip with a carbon one so he said I would never have the problem again. What a result! :-)

I work on cars though through mechanical knowledge, I am NOT a qualified mechanic so, when caled on to a renault clio that was over revving I simply removed the ICV (Idle speed Control Valve) cleaned it and the car was fine however, called back to the same car today as it would not start at all. As I could not find the fault, but suspected the immoboliser was the cause, (no spark & fuel pump inoperative) I looked through many, many, mannnnyyy threads, a VERY common problem as you all know.

SOME of the solutions given clearly work for some but NONE for me until I tried one answer I found elsewhere.

Hold the central locking button down, whilst this is depressed also hold down the accelerator for 10 to 15 seconds, release the central locking button then release the accelerator, press the accelerator down again then start car. HEY PRESTO, the car started and continues to do so however the chap does need a replacement ICV anyway but the car works..he was over joyed, I learnt another trick and everybody is happy..one to try if all else fails..cannot hurt to have numerous options, especially one that costs you nothing. See how you go.

PROBLEMS WITH AN INTERMTTIENT STARTING FAULT?

sometimes it turns over, starts first time, other times it turns over and over, have to try a couple times before it comes to life?

Crank Sensor could be the answer to porblems. i have 2001 clio, only done 40,000 miles so must b around the age.i had my crank sensor replaced last year, dont worry, its cheap. £20 it cost me. i'd had the car about 3 months so was just out of warranty. the garage told me they cleaned the electric connections and it was fine .... for a week then it started again. fortunately my dad had the same problem with his car so he said it could be that. if the battery is good then this could b why. the mechanic told me they are a common problem on clio's.

basically its just a part to tell the engine where to shoot petrol and what positions certain pistons are in when starting the engine.

CRANK SENSOR

Hope this helps and solves your problems :)

after 5 days and all methods of removing immobiliser off my renault clio i finally did it with a mixture of all methods lol? i downloaded the how to bypass immobiliser but that was really hard too, it kept saying that the numbers and letters inside my key were too long?? so i just typed in the model nmbr first (which can be found in your manual or passenger door sticker),then enter, then after lots of attempts later, just the first 7 letters n numbers up to and not including an = sign?? i ignored any characters and numbers after that,(found on sticker inside my key) enter ,hey presto there,s my 4 digit code at last!! but nothing would work the way it said it would???? grrrrrrrr!! light wouldnt slow down etc ? so i put key in ignition switched on, depressed central locking button and pressed down throttle at same time 10 sec, let go both and press in the wiper button the times your 1st digit of your code i.e if your code starts with 2 press it twice then hold down central locking and throttle again 10 secs, let go both and press wiper 2nd number and so on till all numbers in , my flashing light then stopped flashing and i immediatley started the car yessssssss !!! at last no immobiliser, car that works lol!! sooo happy!! i hope this helps you good luck!!

I got mine going again today, 2001 Clio grande - Couldn't get the red light to slow down so couldn't put code in. Turns out I didn't need the code, just press and hold central locking switch until immobiliser stops flashing (stays red), put key in ignition and turn it while pressing the plip at the same time. You need to be quick though and you will hear the central locks click after about 15 secs. Easy peasy. God bless the internet.

If you are experiencing any immobiliser fault with your clio, just get in touch with Remote Keys Ltd and you are done. Contacting Renault dealer will cost you fortune but a fair charge of £93 will save you from spending over £400 at Renault dealership. I made a final decision after reading lots of information on the internet about similar problem.

My Renault Clio (2001 Reg) wasn't starting even though the battary or engine wasn't dead. The immobiliser light kept flashing.
I ordered for the immobiliser bypass device from Remote Keys after unsuccessfully trying all sorts of measures. Spoke to Remote Keys on a Monday and the following day I had the device delivered and poped it straight into the car under the ash tray. The car which had been sitting down idle for almost two weeks started straight away to my excitement.

I had already booked an appointment with Renault dealer but they wouldn't even give me an estimate of the cost so I was scared of towing the car there if I couldn't afford the charge believed to be in the region of £500 including diagnostic charge of £95. I cancelled the appointment and laid my hopes on Remote Keys to come to my rescue and they did. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND REMOTE KEYS FOR YOU IF YOU EXPERIENCE IMMOBILISER FAULT. Check them on their website or call them on 01213080819. Good Luck.

Ok, my problem is similar, but really different O.o

My key is still working fine, but it wont unlock the car, to even get in i have to climb through the boot! (Drivers side AND passenger side locks are broken) Once ive climbed in i can use the central locking button inside the car to unlock the car, but i can no longer use the key to unlock the central locking. The part thats confused me is the immobilizer doesnt kick in, so it must be unlocked?

really confusing, and if you managed to understand that you deserve a pat on the back.

so, to summarize, i cant unlock the car by clicking the key, but the immobilizer doesnt work when i start the car up.

Ive tried to re-program the key by all the methods suggested on here, but to no avail...

Im thinking it could be the IR reciever, but i dont know how to remove it to repair/replace it....can anybody help?

I fixed mine today, chasing different posts all over the internet. my 1996 renult clio 1.4 rt is now fixed and im over the moon. It wasnt to hard, you need to know your factory type number and your key number which will be found in your warranty-servicing book. you then down load a program called renult imm code! when you type in your other numbers it gives you a four digit code. you then get in your car put the key in the ignition so all the lights come up. when you press down the accelrater pedal the immobalizer light goes out you then press the button on your wiper handel the amount of times the first digit in your code is ( e.g if its 2 press the button twice while you foot is fully on the accelerater pedal) then release the pedal then put it down again and repeat the process with the second digit carry on doing this and hey presto no more immobalizer. If your a car theif you have no chance as you wont have the numbers from the service book, better luck next time.lol.

hiya,

youd think renault would be looking into this... gurry... well year ago alarm started playing up, so we got recovery out couldnt do anything but to bash the alarm in with a wrench... very very tempting....
In the end we took out the ir circuit board -- we only had alarm issue - ie noise.. so taking that out it stoped right away... brilliant we thought...

In the cold the last few weeks the alarms been going off when ive started the car, but ive been able to drive and its soon shut up.
Then today, we go out to start it to do christmas shopping ect, and it wont start. So got sick neighbour out of bed, to jump it no joy.
Breakdown man came out and went only renalt can sort it, let me know when you want it towed. Renalt has said i wont have it checked till first week of jan at least.
Result no car over christmas, no way of going to family... im at my wits end...

So ive taken circit board, lovely clean one now, done all people have said, reconected tried my main keys and my emergency keys to reset the warning of the alarm nada.

The only thing i did other day was swop over two fuses to see if it was the fuse causing me to have no radio, central consult light, and no trip omiter..

One fuse change sorted, so i left it thinking tommorrow halfords to get a new fuse. could that of caused a problem??

any other ideas, every time i put battery back on it goes, every time i start the car it goes ans the alarm is blinking noisy...

I'm having the same problem with my MKII Clio immobiliser (Y reg March 01). Couldn't believe that it was such a common problem. Can't give any solutions but i think i'll try a few of the ones mentioned already to see if it works.

Hi Tommy. I keep an eye to these posts just to see if i can help in anyway. As for your car, im not sure. As you may have read in my previous post, i used a company in Birmingham. But i have just checked thier website for you, and it appears because your ariel is at the back of the car rather than above the sunroof at the front, they may not be able to help? If it will let me post the link here at the end of my post, you will see the page i am looking at, but im sure if you give the company a ring, they may be able to point you in the right direction. Hope that helps a little. Snow. http://www.remotekey.co.uk/cars/renault/clio/

Hi everyone. Just reading the posts with interest. I had this same problem with my Clio. After reading many posts on different websites (sometimes making things seem more complex than ever) i can confurm a couple of things. Holding your key fob button while turning the key at the same time in the ignition does normaly make the car start everytime. But after 4 weeks of doing this, my 1st fob died as i had been told it would by another website. I then moved on to my spare key fob. This one lasted another 6 weeks and then died. I replaced the battery in both fobs, but to no avail. I spoke to an friend who is used to work for Renault and he told me to change the whole immobiliser unit was not as easy as i first thought. ECU (the 'brain' which controls the starting of the engine), the ignition barrel, and new key fobs would all have to be bought and then changed and reset. Even buying 2nd hand parts from a scrap yard, and then the hasstles of removing and fitting of these parts did not seem like an option. I was then told it was £140 for 1, yes, £140 for 1 key from Renault! Damn cheek! I was then told about a system that would over ride the whole immobiliser system. Another forum pointed me in the direction of a company in Birmingham called Remotekey Ltd. You can find thier site address on Google. £90 (inc. P+P) and they supply a device that just plugs into the car and hey presto the car will start everytime! I ordered at 10am on the Monday and i had the device by 1pm Tuesday. I cant remember the owner's name, but i can honestly say he was a gent to deal with, and really helped me out. The car starts first time every time! Hope that helps all you people with a Renault Clio mk2. Snow.

Hello, I am sending this mail to clarify why
Renault immobilisers sometimes do not work anymore and you need to repurchase or reprogram the keys.
The problem is that the infamous RFID that are inserted in Keys are erasable with ultraviolet light and as the lords of Renault are the keys with a plastic is too thin, semitransparent UV, which happens if you live in a city with lots of sun or often leave the keys in the sun slowly ... the code stored in RFID is deteriorating and so is not recognized by the control unit that enables the starter.
This is clearly a design flaw and that is not correct to
consumers have to pay.
Renault riproggrammare keys should be free and do not overpay! And shame to take advantage of the not technological knowledge of users.

I took my W reg clio to a renault dealer and they asked first of all for £570 to replace the whole system. I said that its the key thats faulty and they lowered the price to £180 for just the key!! I was going to use Remote Key Ltd. who seem reliable but I had to get the car home first. So I asked the Renault dealer for the immobilizer bypass code (this is a four digit number entered through the central locking button) this cost £15. I drove it home and since then I've had no problems with starting the car without the code. Renault warned me that I would only be able to use the code 8 times when starting so if after the code has been entered your car still wont start without it, the immobilizer will be permanently locked after 8 times of entering the code. This is what Renault told me but I dont know how reliable this is as they also wanted to charge me £570 when the repair was only worth £180.
Hope this helps.
If you havent already got a clio and are thinking of buying one... DON'T!!!

immobiliser and central locking not working,
To start the car i had to use the middle console central locking button ..ingnition on press button 7 times flash /release. then six flashesrelease/again six flashes release/and last time seven flashes release again..this started the car.
I found that the problem with my clio 1.4 1997 ,
Was due to the immobiliser in the roof, by the sun roof and Ariel where rain was leaking in.
(where the internal light switch is)
(it was a swimming pool up there)
So that the problem for me was permanently resolved I sealed in the edges of the sun roof disarmed its sun roof switch so it could not operate any more.
And sealed around the out side of the ariel.
I took out the immobiliser from the roof..cleaned it all up carefully with coton buds and WD 40 ..the main problem seemed to show it was the four electrical contacts on the circuit board that the electrical plug clips on to,
They were all mostly corroded and not having a good contact..
Rubbed them with a little emery cloth until all were clean re-sprayed with WD 40. new battery`s from wilko`s £2.00 for my key fob and hey presto central locking works fine and also the immobiliser.
(just needs a little time and patience)
good luck and save money!!!

I have had similar problems as above.
Remote opens and shuts doors etc but car would not start.
I noticed it only happened when it had been raining.
My local garage asked me if I had a sunroof, which I have and was told likely there is a leak and is one of the most common problems with Renault cars with sunroofs.
Booked in for clean and sealing of sunroof so hope this works.
Worth checking out.

Just had the same problem - problem arose from dirty/corroded immobiliser relays/cables/contacts.
Garage cleaned but also needed to replace key fob - Renault replace the plastic fob/button plus the internal circuit board and reuse the key part. There were also some other cables along the chassis which had rubbed against the chassis and were arcing, so not allowing the car to start - All seems ok now after forking out £165 for the new key fob and £111 for the new relays fitting.

please please post this round every forum where people are having issued with there mark 2 clio. if your red light is flashing on your dash and the immoboliser wont disengage stopping you from starting the vehicle.

1. do not pay renault £99 for a diagnostic
2. there is only 3 possibilities

problem 1 the aerial reciever board is damage behind the light fitting this is caused by water getting in due to a bad ceal in the sun roof or through the aerial. you will be able to tell if it is the ir reciever board as there will liekly still be damp or there will be white marks on the circuit board - remove the board clean it with wd40 and some cotton wool. bingo!

problem 2 - the coil inside the ignition with recieves the signal from the key is damaged i believe this is called the aerial coil and a motor electrican can replace this part for around £20 plus labour and vat.

problem 3 - the most common your key fob open the key replace the battery if it has not been done for over 6 months. check the circuit board inside the key make sure all the solder points are still intact and not broken. this is best bit. after 4 weeks of pain stating checking every wire on the vehicle and all of the above! searching through thousands of forum posts take some cotton wool and some wd40 and clean the circuit board there is a tiny ir sender on there make sure your clean this as the dirt on there is what is stopping the recieve attached to your ecu from seing the true key and stopping it from disabling the immoboliser.

i hope this works for you like it did for me i nearly paid £90 for an immoboliser bypass!!

Hi all.
My wife has the same problem with the imobiliser. with the imobiliser mounted below the aerial, if the seal around the base is broken on leaking slightly the moisture on the imobiliser PCB causes it not to work.
Solution: Fix the seal, clean out the drians from the sunroof, (you need a long welding wire to do this)
I repaired both of these, and also resorted to removing the imobiliser at night, leaving it on the central heating boiler in the kitchen, this solved most of the problems. I have eventually moved the unit from the roof, cut, soldered and rerouted the wires and it is now located in the cubby hole, just the central locking does not work, but the car is now reliable.
Hope this helps.

Hello, my problem is very similar to everyone elses on here. My car is a 51 plate 1.2. My keys got wet, the locking fob does not work and as such the car won't start. It does tick over and I thought originally it was a battery problem, so jump started the car and nothing, so would appear it is the immobiliser. Is the advice the same as below or does the advice relate to an immobiliser with a key pad?

Called Renault dealer adn told only way is to buy new key at £150 and absolutley no other way around it and this would take up to 6 weeks. 6 weeks without a car???

thanks

Have recently used Remotekey.co.uk and can't praise them highly enough! I bought one of their immob bypass modules (they use the code out of your key fob and program the module). You then plug the module in beneath the ashtray and hey presto immob bypassed for good... 89 quid all in and next day delivery (they only need your fob code). Much cheaper and quicker than Renault garage. Thumbs up!

Ok, this is a pain! some one please help...

2001 1.5 dci...

Girlfriend came home one eve and said the central locking had stopped working using the blipper on the key... so i opened it up and the little switch had fallen off... soldered it back on and the locking was working again...great!
BAD NEWS...car wouldnt start anymore!!! grrrr!!!
tried everything I can find on the web, and holding the central locking button down, or trying the accelerator method does not slow down the light to enter a bypas code. tried removing fuses...disconnecting battery for short and long periods...holding button when starting...changed battery in key...nothing is working.

Renault want £150 for a new key, and I dont have a spare.
Really over budget for a car that only cost about £1500.

Can someone offer any further advice? really looking for a cheap fix urgentlt...need the car back on the road as im getting serious ear ache from the mrs... as it now MY FAULT!

Yep, the same happened to me yesterday on my Clio 1.4 2000. Car had been grumbly for a few days starting 2nd, 3rd attempt then central locking suddenly not working and engine not starting at all either. Called out the aa who confirmed it was an immobiliser issue and even though the red light on the key fob was not flashing red anymore when pressed, it apparently was giving out a good signal (so its not always down to the fob battery or the fob, in this case it was the actual immobiliser). So the guy disconnected the car battery for a few minutes then reconnected which reset the immobiliser. Fob light back on, central locking now working again and engine now starting first time everytime. Job done. Only drawback is it also resets the radio so you will need a code to get that back on from Renault.

Might be one of those intermittant things unfortunately as not caused by anything obvious in my case says aa man....

Please follow the previous advice from other threads as I have and give Remote key Ltd a phone call. Very helpful and understanding. 5 star rating. Fixed my immobiliser problems on a 2001 Clio. Recommend this before you pay a visit to the Renault dealer as this will only cost you pounds with no results. Even though they know the only real fix is to bypass the system.

I have an '02 renault clio. the immobiliser is intermittently faulty (won't let me start) I also have a rear (offside) wheel that seems to seize up after it has been parked up for a few hours.
My local garage said they fixed the problem as the handbrake cable was kinked to that wheel.
I have only had the car a year-one previous lady owner - 40,000 on the clock when I bought it. I have spent loads on numerous other faults since I bought it. Reading through the previous messages posted here it would seem there are very common faults with these cars. Is it worth writing to Renault??? before I drive it off a cliff!!

HERE IS MY STORY. RENAULT KANGOO 2000, SAME PROBLEM.TOOK THE KEY TO MASTER LOCKSMITH AT THE KEY CENTRE, 66 BEERSBRIDGE ROAD, BELFAST, N. IRELAND. GUY PUT IN A NEW CIRCUIT BOARD IN KEY AND NEW BATTERY - £18.50 ALL IN.
THEN WENT HOME, TOOK OUT THE FUSE FOR CENTRAL LOCKING/IMMOBILISER, MARKED 20 AMP AND RECOGNISABLE AS THE SYMBOL FOR CAR WITH OPEN DOORS ON CIRCUIT DIAGRAM BELOW FUSES. LEFT IT OUT FOR OVER 30 MINS. FLASHING RED LIGHT WENT OUT. PUT IT BACK IN, FLASHING RED LIGHT BACK ON AS NORMAL. THEN HELD DOWN CENTRAL LOCKING BUTTON IN LOCK POSITION UNTIL CAR LOCKED AND UNLOCKED QUICKLY AND RED LIGHT STOPPED FLASHING AND STAYED CONSTANTLY ON. THEN QUICKLY PRESSED KEY BUTTON, NOT IN IGNITION, AND CAR LOCKED AND UNLOCKED QUICKLY. RED LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING AS NORMAL.PUT KEY IN IGNITION AND TURNED TO 'ON' POSITION AND RED LIGHT WENT OUT AS IT SHOULD - PROBLEM SOLVED - CAR STARTED FINE AGAIN THANK GOD.
LOCKSMITH EXPLAINED IT AS THIS, CIRCUIT BOARD IN KEY REPLACED, THEN IMMOBILISER RESET VIA REMOVED FUSE AND FINALLY KEY AND IMMOBILISER RE SYNCED TOGETHER VIA CENTRAL LOCKING SWITCH METHOD. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU . GOD BLESS. TONY. BELFAST.

There is a design faulty on older Renault Clios. The remote sensor is badly positioned such that it can pack in due to condensation and/or leaks from the sun roof. Here's what you do.

Google Remote Key Ltd. Their website shows you where to find the ECU. Unplug it. Post it to them. They send it back next day - deactivated. Plug it back in. Sorted. Costs £100, but problem fixed for good. Brilliant!

Renault told it can't be deactivated. They will charge you £75 to put it on their diagnostic thingy just to tell you what's wrong. Then the sky's the limit - and they probably won't fix it for good as the basis design fault will not have been adressed.

The immobiliser is behind/under dash on drivers side and is a black box, clipped on. It has 2 plugs, one blue for central locking and one black for immobiliser. Lots of wires, but all the immobiliser does is cuts the ignition system. To bypass, we need to identify the power supply and the wire to the ignition box. These are the only two wires which matter. How about it, tech guys, or have I got it wrong?

Hi there, i had a problem with clio 98 s reg, with both door barrell lock broken. So I bought a new complete lock set( iginition, door barrell, fuel cap, boot lock). But after all the work the car wouldn't start so I called the breadown and they told me that i had to take car to a renault dealer to get a new key and it would cost around £200 and my nearest renault dealer is about 25 miles away was going to cost me around £80 just to take the car. So i tryed all sorts of tips to get the car going but not success with a new key. Then I changed the new key just de metal part and put on old key with chip and tryed but and didn't work so I read a tip that someone wrote on this website to lock and unlock the door with the key and then start the car so the immobilizer would recoginise the chip and should work and thank you all worked as a normal again with no problem. So I saved a couple hundred pounds that I can't afford at the moment.
Thank you very much to who wrote it and I'm so sorry but i forgot you name.

My clio jan 98 R reg hasnt immobilised herself yet but is probably thinking about it so am trying to be prepared.

I like the method of turning off immobiliser using throttle and central locking switch, but should key be in ignition and should ignition be on or off before doing this? Also if battery is disconnected for 30 minutes- see elsewhere in string - will immobiliser come back on?

Is the immobiliser built into the main ECU or is it a separate unit - if separate, where does it live - it should be quite easy to bypass?

By the way the Haynes manual for this model has NO info on immobiliser, so dont buy one in hope.

Early type Renault Key faults- oftern after repeated use the keys 'fail'. As an ex Renault dealer of some 28 years I can say with some certainty that not all failures are immobiliser related but the circuit board in the key has failed. If you open the key up and examin it carefully you will find that the micro switch which has 4 contacts - effectively 1 on each corner - you will find that at least 1 of the contacts has broken. I have seen them where when you open the case the micro switch falls out. In my younger days - when I had good eye site - I used to resolder the keys and presto key works. If you are not confident doing it your self find a tv repair man he might just be able to do it for you. Good luck!

I have a 2001 Y reg Clio, one of my keys stopped working a while ago, and then about 2 weeks ago my other key stopped switching the immobiliser off. I tried a few things to switch the immobiliser off none of which worked. I read it could cost up to £500 for renault to fix and that was not an option I could afford, so decided to try ordering a new key. When I asked Renault the guy said it would cost about £170 for new key and to have it programmed for the central locking, or I could order a key without the button for £22.75 which would have the immobiliser chip in it and did not need to be programmed. I went ahead and ordered the key without and got it few days later. I was chuffed to find it works and I can now start the car. Problem solved for much less than I thought. Hope this helps some of you and if not £23 not a big loss compared with money you could save if it works. good luck!

Just take out the unit... check the slider connections in the back are connecting properly..

Spray the sensor circuitry with WD40, be sure to do this outside as you need to really plaster it. Do the same thing with the circuitry in the fob. Give it half hour to dry out a bit.

On the front of the sensor there are 3 little blocks (IR receivers), lightly tilt them all forward a bit... this improves range and angle the key works from, I can now unlock/immobilise my car from about 15 foot away with nothing in-between fob and sensor (and whilst the key is in the ignition).
Before I had to be almost touching the window.
Hope this helps. :D

my 98 renault clio wont start, it has deteriorated over the last few weeks, lights stopped flashing on locking, then one day the red light on dash would not stop flashing or allow me to start the car, just nothing happened, now it turns over but wont start at all?? we have had a lot of rain and I am wondering if it is this immobiliser in the roof problem, also it takes several goes to open the doors with the key fob, so assume also the battery in fob is worn out??

I am currently having the same problem, with the car sometimes starting, sometimes not. i cant believe the amount of people with leaky sunroofs - miine's has been letting in for ages - sealed twice - just last week actually. My mechanic's gonna have a look at the key/immobiliser issue this week. Hope it works!!

OK- so my problem seems along these lines. I have a '94(N) Clio RT Auto with manual SR. After a night of heavy rain, water started pouring into my lap when cornering. I removed the sensor mounting and the sunroof handle and found the whole section full of water which i dutifully emptied and dried as best as poss. Drove it fine that day. That evening i went to start it again and it was dead, but all the electrics worked. Just no va va voom. That night more torrential downpours... BUT no more leaking sunroof, so i'm optimistically thinking maybe it wasn't done up properly the first time. However, i took out the sensor and the circuit board is corroded at the IR sensor end. One of the three IR sensors has come off, and another blue "chip" thing just behind and to the left of the IR sensors has come adrift by one of it's two points. This leads me to think that in order for that level of corrosion it has to be an ongoing problem. I have only had the car for two weeks. Sold as seen...sigh.

The Imobilisor light on the dash is doing nothing at all- just comes on when you turn the ignition and then goes out even though there is no starting noise. I tried depressing the central locking button while the ignition was on but no change at all. (This was before i took out the circuit, i tried it after as well and still nothing)

Is it worth getting the circuit microwelded or can i get a replacement? Thanks for any answers in advance... :)

Hi all
Just got 2nd Clio Panache 98 reg and immobiliser deactivation was getting worse and worse, fearing getting stuck in the middle of nowhere I saw this website read a thread posted Dec 2008 with the following link http://renaulthelp.110mb.com/ImmBypass.html#CarType

And it worked first time

Hey everyone, My electronic key had stopped working and it was no longer opening the car, so I used the spare key for it. My car was working fine, till last week the immboliser kicked in and I could not start my car. Took it to renault today and was that it would cost about £500 in total to be repaired! My car probably isn't worth that much more than that!

When we got it home, we tried some of the ideas suggested on here and was planning to get the immboliser code tommorow to try out one of the methods on here.

My Step-Dad noticed that on the worksheet we were given by Renault it said something about a Chip. Racking his brains he noticed in the key there is a little squared shape black piece on the opposite side of the electronic circuit. It is easily removable, it is not attached in anyway. He removed this and swapped it with another electronic key we had picked up from the scrap yard (Due to previous problems with locking already had this spare key) So basically he took the black 'chip' out of the key original key and took the 'chip' out of the key from the scrap yard and swapped them over.

Then voile, my car started.

It costs no more than what £5 to pick up a key from the scrap yard, so saves over £400.

Hope this helps.

i have a mark 2 clio without central locking and the immobaliser would not turn off. read the threads on here and had a play around.
I found if i turned the interior light off completly it starts everytime.
This however is only the latest in a litany of problems with this car! possibly the worst car i have ever owned(and ive had some crap)
bought the car two years ago and since then it has had two new drive shafts and wheel bearings. It snapped its cam belt at 40,000 and bent all the valves. The speedo works when it feels like it, nearly set itself on fire when water got in the electrics, snapped its accelarator cable. the back wheel drum brake seized on. this car has cost me in repairs what i paid for it. I have a lemon of a french car! now that must be bad. sorry to rant know its not relavant just needed to get it out.

I,ve had this problem to with the immobiliser where the car will not start for love nor money besause that stipid little light will not stop flashing. the fault can only be one of 2 things: the keys, or the immobilier. you could take it to a dealer and they will charge you £50 just to hook it up to a machine and tell you whats wrong. and after that if its the keys you will have to pay for a new one at a price of around £150 and if its the immobilier i dowt it will be under a couple of hundred pound. so the best way to get arond the problem even without knowing witch one it is, is to bypass the immobiler so it only uses the thread of to key to start the engine. this does not effect the central locking or the car alarm so your car will still be safe. i used a company called remote key ltd. they gave me over the phone instructions how to get to it and take it out then you post it to them. i posted it on tuesday and got it back thursday put it back in and the problem was solved at a small price of £101.77. fantasic service and very patient with me as i rang the alot trying to get the immobiliser out lol hope this helps everyone and sends alot of buisness there way cos they where great.

wot year is the clio??if its the older type which requires you to lock/unlock the doors to deactivate the immobiliser ,then its probably an issue with the roof reciever, those vehicles are quite common for water ingress from the aerial or sunroof.if its the clio2 99 onwards then the chances are the key is at fault, massive issue on those vehicles,a simple check at a dealer would diagnose wether u require a key of if it is a deeper issue like the bic board
hope this helps

Your Clio is doing the same as mine. Can say with confidence that your immobiliser is at fault. I've removed the ECU (took about 15 mins) and I'm sending it to the ECU Doctor to be re programmed so that the system will work off the key and ignore the immobiliser problem. You can fart about with combinations of throttle pedal, central locking button and rear wash button and you might get it to start but the only permanant fix is send it away to be re programmed

I have taken it to a garage they have put a new starter motor on and the prob re occured pretty soon after. also had electrics done seem to be spending loads and getting no where. does this sound like the immobiliser problem ?? Clio Mark ones suffer with this, u can buy the receiver for the immobiliser from Renault and it doesnt need to be coded, just plug it in and it should start. Make sure you also replace the source of the water ingress, it will be the aerial base on the roof - £10 from renault, we put some silicone under it just to make doubly sure it doesnt leak again.

I could not start my clio (S Reg) for a week due to the immoboliser and I tried everything to get it started again, including trying 2 garages. The combination which i eventually used and worked was

(1)remove the battery for 30 minutes (2) Remove the central locking and immobiliser fuse (fuse box is located to the left of the glove box, can only see it when passenger door is open) 3)Lock doors and turn on ignition 5)Hold down the central locking button until it makes a clicking noise 5)Put the fuses back in and repeat process 3 and 4 (6) The car should now start, you know if it works when the light stops flashing fast.

I dont know what part of this actually worked just glad it started again

go to a renault dealer and ask them for the immobliliser code (a unique four digit number) , which costs a tenner. after you have input it with the central locking button in the car (by counting the flashes), you will be able to start the car, and re-synchronise the keys.

For what it's worth the following worked on daughters 2000 1.2 clio which had immobiliser light intermittently not going out and not starting. Disconnected battery for 30+ mins. With ignition on held down central locking and it beeped once? but flashing didn't slow. Now car starts with either key every time as long as button held in on fob whilst starting and key that didn't lock/unlock but could occasionaly start car now does both. Vive LA France!

http://renaulthelp.110mb.com/ImmBypass.html Check this site for ALL car problems. My 1996 clio 1.2 was doing my head in with an immobiliser that wouldnt de activate, a Renault technician advised me `to reset the immobiliser you disconnect the battery terminals for at least 30 mins, then re connect, this does a systems reset for the immobiliser, just like rebooting your pc`. It does work occasionally but the link I`ve included is better and more reliable. Good luck k.

why dont you just turn the immobiliser off!!.

Hold down the Central locking button on the centre-console and depress the throttle, keeop the throttle down until you hear the central locking reset (sounds like lokck and unlock). Release the button then release the throttle. Re-press the throttle to complete. That switches the immobiliser off and if you have a red flashing lamp in the centre console it won;t be flasing if successful.

I have this problem too right now though I think my car is a Mark II? (Sept 2001) The immobiliser won't go off so the car won't start. I've only just bought the car so I think the dealer garage should pay for Renault to repair it, but would love to know how to take the immob out completely.

I've just had the same problem with my Clio. I used a company called Remote Key www.remotekey.co.uk It cost £100 to deactivate the system. The car now starts with a key, no hassle from the immobiliser. You have to remove the immobiliser your self - this was very easy remote key explained how to do it, no tools involved just a couple of wires that clip in place. Remote key were very fast - fixing the problem and sending it back the same day they received it. £100 seems a bit steep for a bit of soldering but I suppose knowledge is power and compared to Renault who were talking of hundreds of pounds it seems a good deal.
