What would cause a tv to shut off?

I have a 47 inch samsung television. It is a high definition, projection screen tv. What happens is I am watching tv and all of a sudden you hear a zoom and the tv shuts of but if i hit the power button on the remote control the red light on the front screen flashes, but the tv doesn't come on. now if i unplug the tv and plug it back in the tv will automatically come back on but for how long who knows, could be a week, could be a hour. My uncle is a electronic and he tells me that where I have such a big tv in such a small room, that the tv gets overheated and shuts off, he suggests that i put a fan next to the back of it or have additional fans put inside of the tv if there is room. I just wanted to check with someone else and see what there opinion is on this problem and can this problem get more serious.
