I specialise in double glazing repairs. After 18 years in the trade I am still learning about all types of locks and ways to repair them. It is not just a case of WD40 but the knowledge of how a lock works and how to repair or replace it. My charges are reasonable and I will not " rip you off ". Nothing is maintenance free and any company that tells you so are not doing their best to satisfy the customer. So give me a call and I will help. Advice is free. Repairs are not and can be expensive if you call out a rogue trader.

My upvc door has locked, i locked it at normal and went to open this morning and the handle will not come down. I can turn the key in the lock to open and close but my handle will not come down. It is like something has catched on and not letting the door open. We can not take the hindges off as someone has put the door on incorrect and we can not get to the screws. Any ideas?

I'm stuck in the house, cannot push the handle up to turn the key. As per advise above do you think it's the multipoint door lock? I can't open to put WD40 on!

Have got the same problem. I opened the lock found a sliding mechanism is broken and requires replacing. Problem i have is finding a store or website that sells spares etc for this type of repair. Normally only professional door repairers carry these items, and then charge an arm and a leg to repair. Sorry cannot give actual way to repair.

any GOOD locksmith would NEVER use WD40on a lock, because it leaves a residue which attracts dust and grit which eventually lead you back to the same problem. The only application should be graphite powder which is more of a slip agent with no comebacks.if the problem persists then the lock cylinder could be suspect, and changing them is straight forward providing you know what you are doing.

OMG!!! I have had this problem since i moved into my new house back in jan 08. we always thought we'd need a locksmith to fix it (as per above, they state only they can fix the problem). well after getting sick of using the back door for 11months i have searched the net for an answer. I saw the above post re wd40 and thought what the hell, if the locksmith gonna charge £200 i'll give it a go. As soon as i sprayed the loack it work. hey presto! USE WD40 NOT A LOCK SMITH AND SAVE £200!!!!

use a qualified locksmith to get the job done properly
£60 - 100 is a good price then if it retro fits , cool. If cuttting out, adjusting keeps and alignments need to be done and the jobs done well. Its well worth paying a MLA Locksmith to do it!!
you can get into a hell of a bother if its not done right. Does this affect your insurance, a lock not being fitted right?? Mmmm

For other people reading this, if the handle still wouldn't push up completely with the door open then it is likely the "multipoint door lock" had failed. You may be looking at £200 to have this part replaced or between £60 - £100 to buy a replacement online and fit it yourself.

One company I have used in the past was www.upvc-hardware.co.uk
They had the lock I needed in stock and all in it cost me just over £70, much cheaper than the local locksmith quoted to replace it!!!!

My daughter and son inlaw had the same problem. Had to get a locksmith [£100] all he did was force it up and squirted load of WD40 into the lock and on the locking rollers and their slides. It works ok now. Try it and save being stitched up for £100 . keep doors and windows lubricated with WD40 at least twice a year.
