Panasonic NV-HS900B ejects cass a few seconds after inserting?

This old VHS / S-VHS machine has been completely reliable until now. The top was removed to see what was happening. When the cassette is inserted, it goes in and loads normally, the tape path becomes threaded normally, and the head drum rotates apparently normally, and the automatic head cleaner is engaged, which makes a noise. After a few seconds the mechanism shuts down and the tape is ejected. I have no technical info at all for this machine, Panasonic seem to have the situation stitched up. Does anyone know of any stock faults that can be responsible for this?
Thanks in advance

In the end, the repair was not attempted. I did not go as far as removing the deck mechanism to look underneath. The machine was repaired by a dealer who replaced the Main Lever, that had cracked. For the benefit of readers, it is a rather intricate and greasy piece of plastic that reaches across the whole deck. It resembles an Airfix model before you remove the parts for building. The thing slides from side to side, and it is supposed to operate numerous moving components as it moves. It is obvious that it would have been impossible to get the deck working without the guidance of a service manual and plenty of time, as well as pretty good working conditions. Some readers will appreciate the implications of putting a motor car engine together without paying attention to the exact positioning of the rotating components when their gears are put into mesh. Some of you may have had the expensive experience that can ruin an engine when the so-called Timing Belt fails, with the result that some of the engine's moving parts collide with each other. Well, these days it is impossible to correctly position all of a VCR's parts with their numerous alignment marks without carefully following the maker's instructions. The result of an error can either be erratic operation, or else much grinding and a shower of broken nylon teeth from cog wheels. In short, even if a service manual could be obtained, it is probably best to entrust the repair to someone who is accustomed to dealing with the deck. Thanks again Cobweb.

NB: 5) should read..

5) If the tape loading seems abnormally slow, thrust screw setting may be **too tight** on the capstan flywheel.
The adjustment is critical and normally set using service reference bar.

Assuming normal cylinder and capstan rotation...

1) Faulty eject button microswitch, it's flimsy and can get jammed on. (Seriously, I've had this myself).

2) End Sensors and Cassette LED dry jointed.

3) Very common on the K-Mechanism is failure of the plastic coupling on the loading motor spindle (it's hidden inside the worm gear). It splits and then doesn't provide enough torque to drive the cam gear. Usually, the cam then gets stuck part way and an error code will be displayed. Possibly a candidate.
I will always check the condition of that part during service.

4) The alignment of the mechanism needs checking, even a tooth out can throw it.

5) If the tape loading seems abnormally slow, tight thrust screw setting for the capstan flywheel.
The adjustment is critical and normally set using service reference bar.

6) Occasionally, faulty mode switch.

7) Cylinder motor runs and then stops, (would cause cassette to eject), possibly IC2501 (BA6871)

Other stock faults..
Main cam gear and sub cam gear..damaged teeth on gears.
(would certainly put mechanism out of alignment or jam completely), although you'd probably hear some grinding!
Main slide plate bent,.. mechanism will jam half way.

The capstan rotates forwards during threading, and backwards during unthreading. The machine does not display any error codes.

Any capstan motor rotation?

Any fault indication in front panel display eg. F03, FO4, F06 or such?
