has the water gone creamy white?sounds like the headgaskets gone like every other rover in the world,cant see any way u could get petrol in the water.if it was petrol in the oil it will be injector seals gone.

Sorry - disregard my answer - did not see the petrol comment. Do you mean oil in water? Any chance gasket gone? If so get garage to pressurise & check cooling system. If OK check thermostat as previous.
