What does a flashing spanner and an M below the mileometer indicate?

I have just bought a second hand (03) Laguna Hatchback and I notice on the mileometer display a flashing spanner and the letter M. What does this indicate or require me to do? Can I get rid of the display or would that cause a problem?

its your service light.u can put itout by pressing certain buttons on your dash & indicator stork in a certain sequence.either that or get it serviced & the garage will put it out 4 u
