How do I connect my laptop to my TV to watch a movie?

I have a movie on my Dell C 600 that I would like to play on my Television. I have a TV out socket on my laptop but when I connect the TV to my laptop nothing happens? What do I need to make it work? Do I need a TV card? Do I need software?

I have a Dell and have used a HDMI lead and it works fine but I am not sure if your supposed to do it this way have not found any info but it does work, i understand you must not connect the HDMI lead while tv or laptop are switched on and switch off before disconnecting.

you must activate your graphics card open its controller on your screen turn on your tv out or 2nd set dualmoniter it is ondly set for one screen at the moment the pc
