Don't just turn the hot off. Some of the hotter programmes normally 60 degree plus use the hot water fill, and so your machine will not progress though the cycle until it is full - not water no fill.
Get a 'Y' piece from wickes or somewhere and connect that to the cold water supply. Now connect both the hot and cold inlet pipes to the 'Y' piece.
