Mend Philips Surround Sound Speakers System

The back speakers are not working?

We have just brought a Philips surround sound system (not expensive) and have set it up but have noticed the back speakers are not working correctly. We have tone tested them and they are working, but when a dvd is played only the front ones are working.It will not play cds either and yet it should??
