Hi Malcolm, You didn't say which engine or model year you have so specific advice isn't possible. As a general guide to replacing alternators, once you have bought the correct replacement and checked it appears to be the matching part, is to initially work out the best path to extract the old alternator from the engine bay. Disconnect the battery for safety's sake and then disconnect the wiring form the alternator. You will probably have to detach the power steering pump from it's mountings but leave it's hoses connected. Check that the belt that drives the alternator is in top condition and consider replacing at the same time if it is worn. You will then need to slacken off the belt tensioner wheel / idler pulley so the belt is loose enough to remove the alternator. Then there will be two long bolts to remove to free up the alternator, once done the alternator should come out. Reverse the procedure when fitting new parts, check belt is tensioned back up again and connect wiring and battery last.
