Mend Mountfield SP350 Sp Self Propel

How do I fix Mountfield SP 350 which will not self propel?

Cable attached to Self-propel mechanism by the wheels. Cable suddenly became about 4-6" too long!
Can't adjust this amount. If cable is pulled [inconveniently] the wheels turn.
